‘Would never approve of my music being used in support of you.’ Noah Kahan slams Trump for using his song in a post.
Add Noah Kahan’s name to the long list of artists who neither approved nor condone the use of their music by President Trump.
The Vermont-born singer-songwriter, who played four shows at Fenway Park earlier this month, made it clear Tuesday that he had nothing to do with the White House’s use of his song, “American Cars,” in one of its Instagram posts.
“Would never approve of my music being used in support of you or this administration,” Kahan commented on a post showing Trump at a General Motors factory in Milford, Mich.
The Kahan kerfuffle comes just a few days after singer Katy Perry slammed the White House for using a snippet of her song “Firework” in a White House TikTok video that included footage of bombing in Iran.
Perry said on X that she was “deeply appalled” that the White House used her song, without permission, to celebrate military strikes in Iran. “To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponized to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for,” Perry wrote. (The singer is currently dating former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, who was an occasional Trump antagonist while in office.)
In response to Kahan’s rebuke, White House spokesperson Kaelan Dorr posted on X: “Symptoms of TDS apparently include having a northern attitude,” a reference to the singer’s 2022 hit song “Northern Attitude.”
Kahan, 29, last month notched his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with the release of “The Great Divide,” the follow-up to his 2022 breakout LP “Stick Season.”
The list of artists infuriated by Trump’s use of their music at campaign rallies and in social media posts is ever growing and includes Beyoncé, Foo Fighters, Celine Dion, Kesha, Tom Petty, and Jack White, who’s made no secret of his antipathy for Trump. Last year, after a Trump aide posted a clip on social media that included the White Stripes song “Seven Nation Army,” White wrote on Instagram: “Don’t even think about using my music you fascists. Lawsuit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others.)”
