Boston City Councilor Henry Santana hospitalized for ‘persistent and unresolved health issues’

Boston City Councilor Henry Santana said Tuesday he has been hospitalized for treatment of “persistent and unresolved health issues,” and is taking what he described as a temporary absence from the city council.

Santana did not clarify what he is receiving treatment for, and his office on Tuesday declined to share any further information.

In a statement posted to his social media accounts, he said has experienced health issues throughout the summer and sought evaluation by doctors last Thursday, which led to the “extended hospital stay.” He said Tuesday that he remains hospitalized for “additional testing” at the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Santana, 30, said this has been an “unexpected and difficult” time for him personally. He said he will miss Wednesday’s city council meeting.

“I look forward to returning to City Hall and to the communities I have the privilege of representing as soon as I am able,” Santana said. “Thank you for your prayers, support, and understanding.”

He said he is focused on following doctors’ orders, undergoing needed testing, and “making a full recovery.”

Santana, an at-large city councilor and close ally of Mayor Michelle Wu, won a second term last fall.
