Sunday’s 8-1 loss to the Braves included another dismal performance by Brayan Bello, who surrendered seven runs, eight hits, and three walks in five innings. Their struggles at the plate continued as well, as they have just 14 runs over the last eight games.

The series with the Royals will be a matchup of last place teams. While the Sox are at the bottom of the AL East, Kansas City is in the basement of AL Central with the Tigers. Here are the standings.

Sonny Gray will get the start for the Sox, while the Royals will counter with Seth Lugo. Here is a preview.

Notes: Gray is 9-2 with a 1.76 ERA in 13 starts against the Royals, bit has not faced them since 2023. … The righthander has allowed just one run on six hits and three walks in 11 innings to win his two starts since coming off the injury list from a strained hamstring. … Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras each have three hits in the last two games. Along with Wilyer Abreu, they are a combined 9-for-24 against Lugo. …Lugo is 0-3 with a 6.61 ERA in three starts against the Red Sox. After a strong start in which he allowed just five runs — four earned — and 19 hits over 31⅓ innings of his first five starts, Lugo has struggled of late, getting tagged for 18 runs and 37 hits in 21⅓ inning over his last four starts.
