Boston Councilor Henry Santana discharged from hospital after 11 days

Boston City Councilor Henry Santana has been discharged from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he received treatment for “persistent and unresolved health issues,” the councilor said Monday.

The at-large councilor is continuing his recovery at home. He was discharged Sunday after an 11-day stay at the hospital, Santana said in a statement.

“I am optimistic about my recovery and look forward to getting back to doing what I love most — serving the people of Boston,” Santana said.

Santana, 30, announced on July 21 he had been hospitalized but did not disclose his ailment. He said in a previous statement he has experienced health issues throughout the summer and sought evaluation by doctors, prompting the extended hospital stay.

Santana previously said he was hospitalized at the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which provides heart and vascular care.

Santana has follow-up appointments and outpatient testing ahead, but he said he feels stronger each day and remains on track to return to City Hall by the council’s Aug. 5 meeting.

He thanked the health care professionals who provided him with “care, compassion, and encouragement” throughout his stay at Brigham and Women’s.

Santana also thanked his family, friends, colleagues, and the Boston residents who checked in on him.

“Although my recovery will continue over the coming weeks, I feel energized, optimistic, and excited to return to the work our communities have entrusted me to do,” Santana said. “This experience has given me an even greater appreciation for the importance of good health, the compassion of those who care for others, and the strength of our community.”
