It’s four in a row for North Reading girls, two straight for Weston boys at Division 5 track championships
BRIDGEWATER — Leading by 1 point after Day 1 of the Division 5 outdoor track and field championships, the North Reading girls had a lot to prove in Sunday’s finale.

Sophia Gallivan, runner-up in the pentathlon, and long jump champion Kate Denehy put on their sprinting spikes and helped the Hornets blaze to a season-best time of 51.06 second in the 4×100 relay.
The relay win was the difference, propelling North Reading (64.5 points) past runner-up Weston (62) for the title, its fourth straight, at Bridgewater State University.
“We came into the meet confident but we didn’t know what to expect,” said Pintzopoulos. “The pentathlon definitely set the tone . . . then we won the 4×100 and I was like, ‘Wait a minute, we’re going to win this meet.’ ”
Denehy did not compete in the triple jump Friday (she attended the prom).
“I just had the wanting to constantly push myself to do better,” said Denehy, the Cape Ann Athlete of the Year. “Not being able to go to the first day was kind of a letdown, but it just gave me more motivation to do better today.”
The junior girls feel the pressure to continue on the legacy their teammates have and will leave behind but are determined to take the leap.
“I feel like we were just waiting for our moment to come up and represent our town,” said Gallivan.
In the boys’ meet, Weston (101.5 points) repeated, outdistancing Old Rochester (60). Matthew Fitzgibbon won the mile (4 minutes, 24.2 seconds) and anchored the 4×800 meter relay win (8:10.41).
“I know we lost some good talent last year but this shows that we can come back and win,” said Fitzgibbon, whose anchor leg helped Weston smash its season-best time by six seconds. “I just really wanted to do that for the team and secure another first place [finish].”
The Wildcats placed fourth in both the 4×100 (44.32) and 4×400(3:29.29).
“We scored in so many different events but it was really the distance kids who drove the bus,” said Weston coach John Monz.
Weston’s Solana Varela won the girls’ 100 hurdles (14.62) and the 400 hurdles with a state-best time of 1:00.22. Freshman teammate Leksi Sullivan won the 800 (2:13.8), cutting five seconds off her personal best, as well as the mile (5:02.85), and helped Weston take first in the 4×400 relay.
“I feel [nervous] every time, but it’s a good thing, it means I care,” said Varela, who is committed to Boston College. “So I try to channel that into my game plan.”
