REI to close its longtime Boston store next month

REI’s Landmark Center location in Boston will permanently close Aug. 13, ending a 23-year run in the city. The closure is part of a broader round of store shutdowns announced last year that also includes locations in New York City and New Jersey.

The last day to place an online or in-store pickup order is July 29, and the last day to drop off bikes, skis, and snowboards for service was July 6. Pickups must happen by Aug. 13.

The nearest REI stores will now be in Reading, Hingham, and Framingham.

The closures announced last year come as the outdoor retailer continues to struggle. Despite ending 2025 with $2.45 billion in net sales, up slightly from 2024, the company still had a net loss of $54.3 million.

However, the company did see a 7 percent year-over-year increase in gross profit.

“We’re seeing clear signs that our plan is working, strengthening the business now and shaping a stronger future for the co-op,” said Mary Beth Laughton, president and CEO of REI Co-op, in a statement.

Last year, REI announced it was also closing its experimental storefront in Cambridge due to underperformance.

REI, headquartered near Seattle, is the nation’s largest consumer co-op and has over 190 locations nationwide.
