Bruins name Trent Whitfield coach of the franchise’s AHL affiliate in Providence

The Bruins appointed Trent Whitfield coach of the AHL Bruins on Monday, 10 years after his arrival in Providence as an assistant to then-bench boss Kevin Dean.

Whitfield, 49, who later served as an assistant to Jay Leach (four seasons) and Ryan Mougenel (five seasons), will have full charge of a bench for the first time in his coaching career, which began as an assistant with the AHL Portland Pirates in 2014-15.

Whitfield moves into the spot vacated by Mougenel. The AHL’s top coach in 2025-26, Mougenel recently was hired as an assistant coach by the Canucks.

Boston general manager Don Sweeney also named Ryan Ward, proud son of Assonet, as an assistant coach in Providence, where he’ll join Ryan Bourque on Whitfield’s staff. Bourque, 35, son of legendary Bruins defensemen Ray Bourque, joined the Providence coaching crew at the start of last season.

Ward, 39, was coach of the USHL Youngstown Phantoms the last four seasons. He began his career some 18 years ago as a video coach with the Islanders, who were coached then by Scott Gordon (recently named coach of Traktor Chelyabinsk in the KHL).

Whitfield, a 1996 Bruins draft pick, suited up for 194 NHL games over eight seasons and recorded 11 goals and 29 points. He broke in with the Capitals, whose premier forward at the time was ex-Bruin Adam Oates.

Whitfield’s promotion became the latest move in a series of coaching/management changes by Sweeney this offseason, including the addition of Kevyn Adams, the ex-Sabres GM and onetime Bruins draft pick, as a senior adviser.

In June, Jamie Langenbrunner, one of Sweeney’s trusted hands in the front office for a decade-plus, departed to look for new opportunities. He recently joined the front office of the Predators, where he’ll hold an assistant GM role under new boss Chris MacFarland, the former Avalanche GM.

Dennis Bonvie, hired by Sweeney as a scout in 2015, recently was promoted to assistant GM, filling the Langenbrunner vacancy.

Leach not long ago was considered a shoo-in to become head coach in Boston. He did not have his contract extended this summer after serving the last two seasons as an assistant — first under Jim Montgomery, then interim Joe Sacco, and then Marco Sturm.

Leach’s departure was followed quickly by the hiring of Matt McIlvane, who was an assistant under Sturm for Germany’s silver-medal team at the 2018 Olympics. McIlvane, a captain at Ohio State, was head coach of the AHL San Diego Gulls the last three seasons.
