Former Patriots offensive lineman Jordan Devey dead at 38

Former NFL offensive lineman Jordan Devey, who appeared in 44 games over eight seasons and was a member of the Patriots’ Super Bowl team in 2014, died Tuesday in Utah at 38. According to his parents, Devey died by suicide, leaving behind a wife and four children.

Devey’s mother, Leslie, told Fox 13 in Utah that the family believes Devey had CTE, but “because of the condition of what happened with his death … we’re not going to be able to test for that and have a definitive answer.”

“We want people to understand that it’s OK to reach out,” said Leslie. “That help is there — and there’s nothing wrong with you for reaching out. You’re not fighting the battle alone.”

Devey had an unusual path to the NFL. He played tuba, not football, in high school, yet with his 6-foot, 7-inch, 320-pound frame, found the sport in college after serving his Mormon mission.

Undrafted in 2013 out of Memphis via Snow College, Devey spent his rookie year with the Patriots practice squad, then started the first three games of 2014 at right guard before losing his spot in the lineup. Devey started one more game that season and was inactive for the Super Bowl XLIX win over the Seahawks, though he received a ring.

Devey started a total of 21 games in seven NFL seasons. After being released by the Patriots after the Super Bowl, Devey started nine games for the 49ers in 2015, and eight games over four seasons with the Chiefs and Raiders.

He retired in 2021 after appearing in one game for Buffalo in 2020, and since has been helping coach high school football in Idaho.
