Could a thunderstorm risk jeopardize the Red Sox’s winning streak once again?

The Red Sox are blazing hot, ripping off 14 straight wins with what’s been the most entertaining team play in recent memory. I found myself leaping off the couch the other day when they came back to win against the Orioles. I honestly don’t remember the last time that happened during a Sox game.

But then Mother Nature played spoiler Tuesday night. Swaths of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms packing lightning led to the early postponement of the team’s attempt to tie the longest winning streak in franchise history.

So here we are. It’s Wednesday. The Red Sox have a split doubleheader lined up today against the Orioles — with games at 1:35 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. — to try and maintain the momentum and match or surpass the record. Doubleheaders are hard enough to sweep as it is, but the weather may interfere once again, at least for the 1:35 p.m. matchup, as an isolated shower or thunderstorm may cause a delay. The game tonight? There is a very low chance for any weather disruption. So let’s get into the forecast specifics.

• A cold front could bring a pop-up shower, or worse, a thunderstorm. If lightning is detected within 8 to 10 miles of Fenway, there should be a 30-minute delay.
• Turning a bit breezy. Most of Fenway will be protected by the wind, but folks on the roof decks may feel a breeze develop, with gusts reaching 20 to 30 mph during the game.
• Temperatures should reach the upper 70s and low 80s, with the air remaining muggy.

• We’re going to see the cold front remain nearby as it slowly drags through the city. This game should stay dry, but there is a very low chance for a lingering shower or thunderstorm for this matchup, as we’ll be well past peak daytime heating.
• The winds will remain gusty, at 20-25 mph.
• The humidity will lessen throughout the game, and temperatures will mostly slip from the upper 70s to the mid-70s — not a problem.

Hopefully the Red Sox can set a new record for consecutive wins by sweeping today’s doubleheader. Hey, they did this exact thing just a few days ago against the Rays.
