Red Sox placing Trevor Story on injured list
ATLANTA — Trevor Story is hitting pause on his miserable season.
The Red Sox are putting their shortstop on the injured list Saturday, a source said, and calling up utility man Nick Sogard to fill his roster spot.
Story, 33, has been dealing with a seemingly minor groin issue for at least most of the season — during which he has struggled occasionally in the field and consistently at the plate.
With a .206 average plus a .244 on-base percentage and .303 slugging mark, Story has ranked as one of the worst all-around hitters in the majors. He also has committed six errors, most in the American League.
In his absence, Andruw Monasterio figures to absorb much of the playing time. He has served as the backup shortstop, including drawing three starts when Story has been on the bench the past three weeks.
Another option for the Sox, particularly if they expect Story to miss an extended period: Move Marcelo Mayer, a natural shortstop, over from second base.
Sogard, 28, has played parts of the past two seasons with the Red Sox, seeing time in the infield and outfield.
