Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia says she’s ‘in high spirits’ following medical episode during council meeting
Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia on Thursday said sheis “stable, in high spirits, and focused on making a full recovery” a day after sheappeared to experiencea medical emergency during a city council meeting.
Mejia appeared conscious as several emergency medical technicians took her out of the council chamber on a stretcher Wednesday afternoon. She said her doctors believe the event was brought on by dehydration and exhaustion.
“The doctors and nurses have taken great care of me,” she said in a statement Thursday.
The at-large city councilor thanked members of the community for checking in on her and said she plans to be “taking it easy over the next few weeks as I rest and recover.”
“Your prayers, kind words, calls, texts, and messages have truly lifted my spirits and reminded me how blessed I am to be surrounded by such an incredible community,” Mejia said.

Emergency medical personnel were calledto the council chamber in City Hall at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday to treat Mejia, the Globe reported. She was taken out of the room on a stretcher about 10 minutes later.
“I want to especially thank my colleagues who rushed to my aid and have continued to check in, and want to thank my fellow elected officials at all levels of government for checking in as well,” Mejia said. “Thank you to our EMS workers and everyone for their support.”
Mejia said she looks forward to returning soonand “getting back to the people’s business.”
