World Cup quarterfinal tickets are getting more expensive

Open your wallet. And reach deep.

Boston Stadium’s cheapest tickets for the World Cup quarterfinal run around $1,500. That’s a 20 percent bump from last week, according to Ticket-Compare.com, a website that aggregates ticket resale data from other reselling platforms. Out of over 60,000 seats in Foxborough, under 1,200 were available on major resale sites as of Thursday afternoon.

“It can work out if you’re crazy enough and willing to pay for a significant premium,” said Alex Bird, a blog editor at Ticket-Compare.com.

Within a few hours of a match starting, prices can drop significantly to help late sellers make a few bucks.

“It’s a game of chicken,” Bird said

Tickets are sold from three categories. Category three are packed with rowdy fans, usually behind a goal post, and the cheapest. Those start at around $1,400 each for the quarterfinal.

The second category jumps to roughly $3,000 for a better field view, though not the best in the house, which costs over $3,500 at minimum.

Last week, Bird saw a category one ticket sell for nearly $300 just a few hours before England and Ghana played.

Because not all tickets are released at the same time, prices constantly fluctuate, said Brian Hess, executive director of Sports Fans Coalition, an advocacy organization.

“It’s a huge problem when they are not released all at once,” Hess said. “All parties evolved in the reselling ecosystem have been failing fans.”

Previously, World Cup ticket resales have fallen through and left many fans stranded. FIFA has recommended fans to buy these tickets through its own site. There, FIFA forces a 30 percent fee on every resold ticket, 15 percent each for the buyer and seller.

In December last year, face-value category three tickets for Boston’s quarterfinal were $650.

“It’s gonna continue to sky rocket as we get closer to the end,” Bird said.
