Celtics agree to four-year contract extension with center Neemias Queta

The Celtics on Friday agreed to a four-year, $56 million contract extension with center Neemias Queta, a league source confirmed.

It is at least one slice of good news for a franchise that has been under fire for the past two days following the stunning trade of Jaylen Brown to the 76ers. The Celtics exercised next season’s $2.7 million option for Queta last week, and the big man’s extension will begin at the start of the 2027-28 season.

Queta, 26, is a developmental success story. The former second-round pick was waived by the Kings and signed a two-way contract with the Celtics at the start of the 2023-24 season. Near the end of that regular season, which ended with an NBA championship, Queta’s two-way deal was converted into a standard NBA contract.

Last season he averaged 10.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 65.3 percent from the field. Now, he has secured his long-term future as Boston’s starting center.
