The 44th president will be the fifth former US commander in chief to headline the school’s Salem State Series.

“A Conversation with President Barack Obama” will be held Sept. 21 at the university’s Rockett Arena.

“President Obama has long emphasized the importance of civic participation, public service and community engagement, values that closely align with Salem State University’s mission as the Commonwealth’s Civic Engagement University and with the Salem State Series’ longstanding role as a community enrichment program,” according to the university’s website.

Tickets go on sale to the general public July 15. General admission bleacher seats cost $40. Reserved seats will be $80, and premium seats will be $150.

The event follows this summer’s opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

“In his post-presidency, President Obama has dedicated his efforts to supporting the next generation of leaders,” the university’s website said. “The Obama Foundation is bringing that vision to life through programs for emerging leaders across continents, and the Foundation’s mission to inspire, empower, and connect people to change their world.”

Past presidents to appear at the speakers’ series are Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Bush spoke twice at the series.

The series was founded in 1982 by the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc.

The series has hosted world leaders, activists, artists, athletes, and intellectuals at the North Shore campus, ranging from Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, to Maya Angelou and South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

“The Series is but one facet of the university’s progressive public education mission,” according to the school’s website.
