Bruins free up space in net by trading backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo to the Rangers for AHL forward
The Bruins cleared salary space and their goalie logjam Wednesday afternoon, sending veteran Joonas Korpisalo to the Rangers for forward Kalle Vaisanen and a 2028 fourth-round draft pick.
The move allows the Bruins to promote Michael DiPietro after two standout seasons for AHL Providence.
Korpisalo, acquired in the Linus Ullmark deal with the Senators, had served as Jeremy Swayman’s backup the last two seasons and was 25-19-9 as a Bruin. Boston owed Korpisalo $3 million of his $4 million salary in 2026-27, with the Senators on the hook for the other $1 million.
Vaisanen, 23, had three goals and an assist in 51 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, New York’s AHL affiliate, last season. The 6-foot-5-inch, 200-pounder was a fourth-round pick in 2021. A Finn like Korpisalo, Vaisanen has represented his country in a number of international tournaments.
