Game 79: Yankees at Red Sox lineups and notes

After dropping the series finale to the MLB-worst Rockies in Denver on Wednesday afternoon, the Red Sox will be back at Fenway Park Thursday night to face the Yankees.

The game is the beginning of a seven-game homestand. After four against their longtime rivals, the Sox will host the Nationals for a three-game series starting Monday.

The Sox could have been, and probably should have been, riding a three-game winning streak and coming off a sweep in Colorado, but a pair of late-inning collapses resulted in losses to drop them to 14 games below .500 and 15½ games behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East.

Lefthander Connelly Early will get the nod for the Sox in the opener, while the Yankees will counter with Walpole native and Northeastern product Cam Schlittler.

He gave up three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out four in a 4-0 loss to New York on April 21. … Schlittler 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA in two career regular-season starts against the Sox. … The two squared off in the decisive Game 3 wild-card series last October, with Schlittler striking out 12 over eight innings in a 4-0 win for the Yankees.
