Eleven high school sports takeaways from a Wednesday packed with more than 450 games

Wednesday morning started with the approval of Super 8 tournaments for baseball and ice hockey and the night concluded with one of the busiest slates of the spring season.

Wednesday’s statewide tally: 114 baseball games, 96 softball games, 49 boys’ lacrosse games, 31 girls’ lacrosse games, 57 boys’ tennis matches, 59 girls’ tennis matches, 41 boys’ volleyball matches, and a scattering of track and girls’ golf meets.

Globe Schools wrote about more than 160 of them, an unofficial record for us, so without further ado let’s get into all the highlights, which included an 18-strikeout perfect game, an 800th career strikeout, a coach’s 450th win, a school record for girls’ lacrosse points, and plenty more.

1. Milestones

▪ King Philip senior McCoy Walsh fanned 13 Milford batters in a 5-0 softball triumph, eclipsing 800 career strikeouts in the process.

▪ Senior Avery Valicenti scored four goals and dished an assist to become the first player in Archbishop Williams’ girls’ lacrosse program history to reach 500 career points during a 15-5 win over Cardinal Spellman.

▪ Rockland junior Tommy Reyno surpassed 500 career saves during a 9-8 boys’ lacrosse win over East Bridgewater.

▪ Bridgewater-Raynham softball beat Barnstable, 18-0, for coach Mike Carrozza’s 450th career win. Carrozza has led the Trojans since 1998.

▪ Mansfield boys’ lacrosse defeated Canton, 14-5, marking coach Tim Frias’s 200th career win.

▪ Dighton-Rehoboth senior Gia Papa scored four times to reach 100 career goals, adding four assists for good measure in an 18-0 girls’ lacrosse blanking of Greater New Bedford.

▪ Braintree senior Audrey Leung struck out five Weymouth batters in a 7-1 softball win, notching her 100th career strikeout in the process. She is committed to Bentley.

▪ Beverly junior Annabelle Miller won five draw controls to reach 100 for her career in a 14-3 girls’ lacrosse triumph vs. Peabody.

▪ With a 9-8 boys’ lacrosse triumph over South Coast rival Old Rochester, Apponequet coach Jeremy Nodelman recorded his 100th win with the Lakers, who he has coached since 2016.

▪ Westwood junior Will Sesselman surpassed 100 career points in a 10-7 boys’ lacrosse win over Hopkinton.

▪ Lynn Classical produced its 50th boys’ volleyball win in the four-year history of the program with a 3-0 triumph over Chelsea.

2. Crowning champs

Claiming league titles were: Bridgewater-Raynham baseball (Pioneer), Bridgewater-Raynham boys’ and girls’ track (Pioneer), Gloucester softball (Northeast Lynch), Dighton-Rehoboth softball (South Coast Blue), St. Mary’s softball (Catholic Central), St. Mary’s girls’ lacrosse (Catholic Central), Chelmsford boys’ volleyball (Merrimack Valley), Marblehead boys’ lacrosse (Northeastern Dunn), Brooks softball (ISL tri-champs), and Shawsheen baseball, which captured its sixth straight Commonwealth crown.

3. The upsets

Six Top 20 baseball teams, including four of the top 10, went down Wednesday, and two softball squads joined them.

▪ No. 5 Walpole baseball was taken down by No. 14 Milton, 5-3, thanks to two RBIs and a two-inning save from Tim Sullivan.

▪ Right behind Walpole was No. 6 Catholic Memorial falling to an unranked St. John’s Prep team, 3-1, as Collin Thornburgh mowed down 10 hitters for the Eagles.

▪ Making it three in a row, No. 7 Braintree also faltered, losing 4-1 to an unranked Weymouth squad.

▪ No. 10 Franklin baseball got walked off by unranked Attleboro, 6-5, when Austin Taliaferro drove in Benjamin Lally in the seventh.

▪ Unranked Oliver Ames baseball needed a big performance from Alex Saade, who had two hits and three RBIs while working five innings in relief, to stun No. 16 Canton, 9-6.

▪ No. 18 Winchester baseball lost, 7-6, to unranked Woburn on Matt Olson’s walkoff single, and while it wasn’t an upset, No. 2 Bishop Feehan was defeated, 7-2, by the NEPSAC’s Putnam Science Academy.

▪ On the softball side, unranked Franklin routed No. 6 Attleboro, 10-1, with Amelia Rakitin driving in three runs for the Panthers, and unranked Lexington snuck past No. 20 Reading, 11-10, with Lilly Franchella providing a three-run homer.

4. Best finishes

It was a whirlwind of walkoffs on the baseball and softball diamonds, and toss in a few overtime results and last-second winners from the lacrosse pitch and you have a day chock-full of thrilling finishes.

In baseball action: BB&N’s Michael Noonan walked off Groton, 8-7 in the ISL Tournament; Marblehead’s Ryan Angilly delivered an RBI single to walk off Beverly, 2-1; Westwood’s McGowan launched his second homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth to beat Norwood, 4-3; Wilmington’s Noah Titterington drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to beat Watertown, 7-6; Masconomet’s Benjamin Linehan waited until the 11th inning to deliver his two-out RBI single and defeat Danvers, 3-2.

For softball: Silver Lake’s Anna Craft notched a walkoff single to defeat Duxbury, 12-11; Georgetown walked off Manchester Essex, 8-7; Haverhill’s Gabryella Kirby broke a deadlock in the ninth inning with an RBi single to lift the Hillies past Dracut, 3-2; Central Catholic’s Stella Clements tied its game with Billerica with a homer in the sixth, then Emily Goc slapped a walkoff single for a 3-2 victory; Pembroke’s Kathryn McPhee lofted a sac fly and Lilliana Manon raced home for the winning run in a 3-2 triumph over Hanover.

With two seconds left in regulation, Ava Santo potted the winning goal for Arlington Catholic in a 12-11 girls’ lacrosse victory over Bishop Stang. Gavin Rodrigues had the overtime winner for Somerset Berkley boys’ lacrosse in a 9-8 win against Seekonk, and Rockland’s Brayden Rau completed his hat trick with an overtime dagger to defeat East Bridgewater, 9-8.

5. Going, going, gone

More than 30 homers were reported to the Globe, with Plymouth South’s Braxton Werner blasting the only grand slam, while Westwood’s Teddy McGowan and Foxborough’s Harrison Lamson both left the yard twice.

Dighton-Rehoboth got homers from Connor Silva Jr. and Gavin Hayden, Weston got blasts from Aidan Murphy and Ryan Hinckley, and West Springfield enjoyed longballs from Mike Zarelli and Patrick Herlihy.

The rest of the day’s round-trippers belonged to: Central Catholic’s Stella Clements, Pentucket’s Maizlyn Brush, Wellesley’s Abby Brown, Marblehead’s Tessa Francis, Newton South’s Zoe Spector, Thayer’s Neil MacKinnon, Sandwich’s Tyler Jones, Shawsheen’s Max Snapausky, Bishop Stang’s Amir Cartagena, Westford’s Khloe Felicani, Lexington’s Lilly Franchella, Brooks’s Summer Warren, Taunton’s Joey Benoit, Reading’s Colby Farris, Wareham’s John Varden, Oliver Ames’s Stella Morris, Acton-Boxborough’s Jackson Leahy, and Burlington’s Danny Crossman.

6. 13 stars

Jackson Cabe, Wareham — The best performance of the day belonged to the freshman lefthander, who struck out 18 in a perfect game as the Vikings beat Atlantis Charter, 6-0.

Chloe D’Agostino, Woburn — Just a freshman, she hurled a two-hit shutout of Winchester, fanning seven in a 10-0 win. She added a double, triple, two walks, and three RBIs.

Tyler Forbes, Marblehead — The junior was everywhere, scoring four goals and assisting on six to finish with 10 points in a 16-7 boys’ lacrosse win over Masconomet.

Jacob Landers, Middleborough — The sophomore fired a five-inning no-hitter, striking out eight in a 15-0 baseball romp over Norwell.

Neil MacKinnon, Thayer — The senior sealed his own shutout victory on the mound with a solo homer in the seventh inning, providing the offense he needed for a 1-0 baseball victory over St. Mark’s in the ISL Tournament quarterfinals.

Carly McEwan, Bridgewater-Raynham — In addition to tossing a nine-strikeout four-hitter, she slapped two hits and drove in three runs in the Trojan’s 18-0 softball win over Barnstable.

Nick McFadden, Bishop Fenwick — Another big two-way performance saw the junior fire a two-hitter on the mound and rap out three hits at the plate in a 6-1 baseball win over Arlington Catholic.

Aidan Murphy, Weston — The senior swung a hot stick, finishing with 4 hits, 3 RBIs, and 5 runs while homering in a 15-5 baseball win over Lincoln-Sudbury.

Zach O’Donnell, Wayland — The junior played distributor to perfection, handing out 49 assists in a 3-1 win over Agawam in a rematch of last year’s Division 2 championship.

Darren Rodriguez, Lawrence — The senior was a two-way force, rapping out three hits while striking out nine and scattering four hits and one run in a 3-2 baseball win over Andover.

Sam Szczesny, Duxbury — The senior captain fired a 95-pitch no-hitter to beat Silver Lake, 8-2, walking three and striking out seven.

Hayden Valiton and Ava Damiani, Lynnfield — Valiton, a junior, produced nine goals, and Damiani produced 9 points with four goals and five assists to top Pentucket, 18-8.

7. Commitment central

▪ Methuen senior Ali Kalle, a 5-foot-9-inch, 180-pound running back, has committed to play football at Worcester State.

8. Transfer station

▪ Former Shawsheen football star Cullen Walsh announced he will be transferring from Anna Maria to Division 1 New Haven. The 6-3, 240-pound defensive lineman from Wilmington started his college career at Framingham State and still has three years of eligibilty remaining.

9. Coaching carousel

Concord-Carlisle announced the hiring of Mary Desmond as its next field hockey coach. Desmond, a teacher at C-C who played at UMass Lowell, she has 15 years experience coaching field hockey, including as varsity coach at Groton-Dunstable.

“I am truly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to working with a talented, hard-working group of athletes and coaches,” Desmond said in a statement.

The Patriots went 10-5-5 last year, reaching the second round of the Division 1 tournament under Jacquelyn Turner.
