Enormous etchings of numbers interpreted as threat to Trump appear on National Mall
U.S. Park Police, the D.C. fire department and members of the National Guard were seen responding Thursday to what appeared to be large-scale etchings of the numerals “86 47” on the grounds of the National Mall.

The numerals 8, 6 and 7 were visible, but the 4 wasn’t clearly etched into the grass. It remains unclear how the markings were made. The term “86” is restaurant industry slang that generally refers to the unavailability of an item or a customer’s removal. Trump allies have argued it can also mean to kill someone. Trump is the 47th president of the United States, so the digits have been used to show opposition to Trump and have been seen by some as a threat against him.
The numerals were not discernible to people on the National Mall, who could only see a few brownish patches of grass near the World War II Memorial. The numerals seemed to be visible only from a tall vantage point, such as the top of the Washington Monument.
Multiple emergency vehicles could be seen encircling the grass around 1 p.m. A team of officers stood over brown patches in the grass, wearing gloves, and appeared to be testing the grass with materials from a yellow case.
Pedestrians were not permitted to walk on the grass, and a Park Service helicopter circled overhead.

Simultaneously, parachutists bearing American and POW flags descended from the sky to land near the numerals, an aerial rehearsal for America 250 festivities.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded to a request of comment on the markings with an email. “Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible,” Ingle wrote. “They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head.”
The Justice Department alleged in an indictment of James B. Comey that a 2025 social media post in which the former FBI director arranged seashells into the numbers “86 47” was an expression of intent to harm Trump. Comey removed the post and later apologized, denying any violent intent. Comey’s trial is scheduled to begin in October.
This month, a federal judge prohibited the National Park Service from taking action against the organization Accountability NOW USA, which displayed an “86 47” flag as part of an ongoing permitted demonstration in Washington. The Secret Service started an investigation into a volunteer with the organization after the flag was displayed.
