2. The upsets
Tuesday wasn’t a good day for lower seeds, which went 2-61.
No. 12 Franklin County Tech softball ended No. 4 West Boylston’s 20-game win streak with a 4-2 Division 5 second-round win thanks to strong pitching from Brayleigh Burgh and an RBI single from Emma Petersen.
In Division 3 boys’ tennis, No. 9 Medfield managed a 4-1 victory over No. 1 Wilmington, with singles victories coming from Warren Churchill and Braeden Chamberland.
Monday, meanwhile, saw a trio of single-digit seeded baseball teams drop from the Division 2 bracket: No. 6 Shepherd Hill fell, 5-4, to No. 27 Canton; No. 8 Minnechaug was defeated, 8-2, by No. 25 Masconomet; and No. 9 Hingham was bounced by No. 24 Nashoba.
In the Division 1 softball first round Monday, No. 22 Methuen took down No. 11 Needham, 7-1, with Melany Reyes providing three hits and two RBIs.
3. Best finishes
Two softball games ended on walkoffs, and one girls’ lacrosse game was settled in the final 30 seconds.
In Division 2 softball, Marshfield sophomore Makenna Robinson singled in the ninth inning to score Cam Bonarrigo and deliver the second-seeded Rams a 3-2 second-round triumph over No. 18 Agawam.
In Division 5, it was Monson sophomore Maddy Caron rapping the walkoff single, which scored Chelsea Hull and propelled the seventh-seeded Mustangs past No. 10 Tahanto, 14-13, and into the quarterfinals.
Duxbury junior Gabby Fisher netted her sixth goal of the day with 26 seconds to play in a 13-12 Division 2 girls’ lacrosse quarterfinal win for the fourth-seeded Dragons over No. 5 Longmeadow.
4. Seven stars
Nico Alves, Gloucester — The senior fanned 14 batters while shutting out Nauset, 2-0, in the first round of the Division 3 baseball tournament.
Caroline Arruda, Marshfield — The sophomore was a two-way force, homering to help her own cause as she scattered six hits and struck out four to earn a 3-2 Division 2 second-round win over Agawam.
Jenna Callahan, Attleboro — The senior did it all, allowing just one run in the circle while fanning five, to delivering three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in a 7-1 Division 1 second-round softball triumph over Bishop Feehan.
Chelsea Hull, Monson — The junior, who recently surpassed 400 career strikeouts, fanned five and walked none while contributing a pair of triples and a double to the Mustangs’ 14-13 Division 5 second-round win over Tahanto.
Anna Patterson, Foxborough — Just a freshman, she met the postseason pressure and fired a 13-strikeout no-hitter, blanking Lynnfield, 4-0 in the first round of the Division 3 softball bracket.
Chloe Salerno, Central Catholic — The junior belted a grand slam to power a 13-7 Division 1 softball win over Peabody.
Shelby Quinn, Seekonk — The junior swung a hot bat in a 10-7 Division 4 second-round win over Cohasset, crushing a two-run homer, ripping an RBI single, and walking twice.
5. Agganis scholarship winners
The 2026 Agannis All-Star games will be played June 27-28 in Lynn, and in anticipation the Agganis Foundation announced its 2026 scholarship recipients.
Named for legendary Lynn athlete Harry Agganis, the foundation has awarded $2.68 million in scholarships to 1,086 student-athletes since its founding in 1958. Each recipient receives a $2,000 yearly scholarship for each year they are in college. An additional President’s scholarship is a one-time $2,000 award. This year, an 11th scholarship was named for Paul Halloran, a longtime Daily Item sportswriter and longtime executive director of the Agganis games.
This year’s scholarship recipients are: Lynn Tech’s Awan Awan (Cornell), Marblehead’s Sydney Ball (Temple), KIPP Academy’s Joseph Beato (Rice), Peabody’s Elizabeth Bettencourt (Bates), Marblehead’s Breydan Callahan (Johns Hopkins), Swampscott’s Nico Croft (Michigan), Lynn English’s Madisen McHale (Salem State), Salem’s Mia Silva (Amherst), and four St. Mary’s students: Calli Allaire (Vanderbilt), Cameryn Dunn (Stonehill), Micah Hashikawa (Michigan), and Samuel Phelps (Tufts).
“The Scholarship Committee continues to be impressed with the quality of applications we receive from across North Shore every year,” said David Angeramo, chair of the committee. “Not only are these students getting the job done in the classroom and on the field, they are also making a difference in their schools and in the greater community.”
6. Adrian Martinez Classic on deck
This Sunday, Emerson Field in Concord will host the 15th annual Adrian Martinez Classic, a track meet featuring elite athletes, Olympians, and local runners.
The competition is named for a champion miler from Concord-Carlisle who died of cardiac arrest at age 22. The meet raises funds for his high school teams, as well as a scholarship in his name.
There is prize money for the top four male and female finishers in the 800, 1,500, and 2-mile, with bonuses for meet records and American records. There is also a one-lap dash for 8-and-unders, a family 4×400 relay, and, in Martinez’s honor, mile races for every age.
The community races start at 4 p.m. and the high-performance sections begin at 6 p.m.
