Lexington girls graduate to two-time Division 1 track champions, St. John’s Prep sprints to boys’ title

WESTFIELD — At 10 a.m. Sunday, Ainsley Cuthbertson, Monjola Finnih, and Aubrey Deardorf donned blue gowns and mortarboard caps as they participated in Lexington High’s graduation ceremony.

Ceremonies wrapped up at 12:15 p.m., they darted out, threw their special wardrobes in the back of their cars, and booked it for a 90-minute, 100-mile drive.

They arrived just in time for the 2:30 p.m. Division 1 outdoor track championships at Westfield State.

At 7:30 p.m., they put their robes back on, but instead of accepting a diploma, they lifted the state championship trophy. Finding success in nearly every event, Lexington (118 points) sped past Newton North (75) and Wachusett (61.5) to win a second straight state title.

“Today was the cherry on top,” said Cuthbertson, who placed first in the discus (133 feet, 7 inches) and the shot put (41-05). “Graduation was awesome, obviously. But being able to come here today — doing what you love with the team that you love — is really special.”

Plenty of Minutemen took home first-place finishes over the two-day competition. Amelia Whorton championed the 800 meters (2 minutes, 09.29 seconds) and the mile (4:52.66), while Aubrey Deardorf owned the triple jump (38-07.75). Callie Glenn, Natalie Bielat, Jane Conrad, and Whorton teamed up for the fastest 4×800 relay performance (9:17.26) in the state this season.

“It was a huge team effort. It was not just one group — it wasn’t just distance, it wasn’t just throws,” said Lexington coach Rebecca Trachsel. “They are so passionate about the sport. They are so driven, and they all just really love and support each other.”

On the boys’ side, St. John’s Prep drove 100 miles to show off at 100 meters.

The Eagles’ 4×100 relay team of Andrew McManmon, Dayvian Sullivan, Ethan Stefanovich, and Ahmir Hykel set the state mark (41.53 seconds), and in the 100, McManmon (10.89) and Sullivan (10.92) were second and third, respectively. With 24 points from the 100-meter events, the Eagles (98 points) topped Lexington (85) and Xaverian (62) for the title.

“They’ve been waiting for this day all season,” said Prep coach Zach Lankow. “Very lucky to have the 4×100 team we have. There’s a lot of good kids in the state, but we thought we had the best quartet.”

As dominant as they were at short distances, the Eagles were a well-rounded bunch. Tyson Stroope won the high jump (6-06) and the pentathlon (3,619 points), while Mickey Kuleszka was best at the javelin (173-07).

“There were so many really great things,” said Lankow. “This senior class is awesome — such great leaders. They’re great. I’m so lucky to have them, and I’m so proud.”
