Sunday’s nine high school tournament takeaways, including major upsets and Bumila’s first playoff start
After a mostly sleepy Saturday, Sunday was a wild one for the MIAA postseason.
Not only were five state championship track meets held, and Brody Bumila was on the mound for Bishop Feehan, but it also marked the first day of real upsets in what has been a mostly chalky tournament — across all sports — thus far.

For all the complaints about power rankings and strength-of-schedule and whether wins should factor in and how much margin of victory is the right amount, for the most part higher seeds have been winning thus far, even if they have an inferior record.
That flipped a bit Sunday, with three top-seven seeded baseball teams falling (No. 35 North Quincy took out No. 3 Springfield Central!), as well as a top-10 softball squad and a trio of higher-seeded boys’ lacrosse teams seeded in the teens.
With those upsets, the Division 1 baseball bracket is guaranteed a quarterfinal appearance by a team seeded in the 20s after No. 23 Pope Francis and No. 27 Westford meet in the second round.

No. 3 Springfield Central was sent packing by No. 35 North Quincy, which rode a sterling Max LaMonica pitching performance (10 strikeouts in 5⅔ innings) and a two-run double from John Barron in the sixth to a 5-4 first-round stunner.
Also in D1, No. 26 Westford enjoyed the work of its ace as Jared Welsh went the distance, limiting the damage to five hits and two walks and striking out two in a 4-3 first-round upset of No. 7 Taunton. “He’s a very smart guy who hits his spots and knows when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em,” Westford coach Mike Parent said.
In Division 3, No. 28 Billerica took down No. 5 Bishop Stang, riding Cam Amenkowicz’s nine-whiff shutout and Ryan Fisher’s two run single in the fourth inning to a 3-0 first-round win. Also in D3 baseball, No. 17 Newburyport defeated No. 16 Dighton-Rehoboth, 3-0.
No. 9 Andover became the highest seed sent packing thus far from the Division 1 softball bracket, falling 7-2 to No. 24 Beverly, which got big days at the plate from Lidia Miedema, Sophia Balducci, and Kayla Everett.
In the boys’ lacrosse tournament, No. 11 Advanced Math and Science was bounced in Division 4, No. 15 Bishop Stang is out in D3, and No. 16 Plymouth North got beat in D2. AMSA lost, 16-12, to No. 22 Lynnfield, which got five goals apiece from Sean Bridges and Sam Curley. Plymouth North was undone, 16-10, by No. 17 Silver Lake, which got five goals each from Finn Cronin and Owen MacInnis.
