Historic win for Duxbury girls, Mohoric paces Newburyport boys to Division 4 outdoor track championship
BRIDGEWATER — With only 3 points separating first and third place in the girls’ standings, the final heat of the 4×400 meter relay set to begin, and the skies clearing up after a drizzle of rain, one couldn’t ask for a more dramatic finish at the Division 4 track and field championships at Bridgewater State.

The roar of the crowd was near deafening as Riley Earle leaned across the finish line for Duxbury. The Dragons’ time of 3 minutes, 54.73 seconds was not only a meet record and new top time in the state, it, most importantly, gave Duxbury its first outdoor state title in program history with 52 points. Amherst Pelham was runner-up with 49 points.
“No one competes harder than these four girls right here on the line,” said Duxbury coach Kathy Earle, whose team recently won its first Patriot League title in 40 years. “They never even questioned it. They just went out and got it.”
It’s the Dragons’ first season in Division 4 after a move down from D3, and they only had 8 points after Day 1 of competition Thursday. After battling into pole position, Kathy Earle explained the stakes to her 4×400 relay with only a 1-point lead over Amherst-Pelham, and Liv Coperine, Madeline MacKinnon, Emma MacDonald, and her daughter, Riley, made history.
Duxbury’s other winner was Addie Bjorness, who won the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches. All members of the 4×400 relay placed in the 400, crossing the line 4-5-6-7.
“It was so surreal when I [crossed] the finish line and I heard [the announcer] say ‘the Dragons won’t be slayed,” said Riley Earle, who will join the same group again next season as the three juniors and MacDonald, a freshman, look to repeat. “My teammates gave me a great lead . . . they worked as hard as they could to get me to have such a lead, and so I knew I wanted to pay them back by holding it.”
“We all know our limits, so if we could push and have those times, if not faster, then we knew we had it,” said leadoff leg Madeleine Callahan.
Newburyport took the boys’ title with 78 points over runner-up Pembroke (69 points). Standout senior Michael Mohoric championed all three of his events, taking the 800 in a three-second personal best of 1 minute, 51.99 seconds, the mile (4:13.19) and anchoring the 4×800 meter (8:6.12).
“The most meaningful thing training at Newburyport has been a culture of enjoying hard work,” said Mohoric, who will run at MIT.
A photo finish in the girls’ 4×800 meter saw anchor Sophia Warnetski help Ashland set a meet record of 9:26.65, smashing the previous time, set in 2011, by 13 seconds.
