Former US Attorney Rachael Rollins among slate of candidates qualifying for district attorney races statewide
Rachael Rollins, one of Suffolk County’s former top prosecutors whose political career unraveled amid ethics violations three years ago, has secured her spot on the ballot to regain her job, according to information released Tuesday by the secretary of state’s office.

An unofficial list of candidates who submitted enough signatures to qualify for the ballot lists Rollins among those running for Suffolk District attorney, alongside incumbent Kevin Hayden and local attorney Linda Champion, a former member of Hayden’s leadership team.
The list also includes candidates who qualified in races across the state, including eight contenders in Norfolk County, where longtime District Attorney Michael Morrissey is not seeking reelection after a 50-year career marked in recent years by his prosecution of Karen Read and his office’s handling of the investigation into Sandra Birchmore’s death.
“Today, it starts,” Rollins told her followers in a video posted to social media Tuesday evening. “We’re going to bring Suffolk County DA’s office back to the community.”
Neither Hayden’s office nor Champion immediately responded to requests for comment Tuesday night.
The candidate list remains subject to change until the June 2 deadline to file nomination papers, according to the secretary of state’s office.
A final candidates list will then be released.
Seven Democrats are vying to replace Morrissey, including Greg Connor, the chief trial counsel and chief of homicide in Morrissey’s office, who prosecuted Brian Walshe, the Cohasset man accused of killing and dismembering his wife in January 2023.

The other Democratic candidates are former Governor’s Council member Robert Jubinville, former state prosecutor Djuna Perkins, Cohasset School Committee member and former state prosecutor Craig MacLellan, former state prosecutor Macy Lee, former prosecutor Adam Deitch, and public defender Jim Barakat. Attorney Joseph Pagliarulo, of Millis, is running as an independent.
In Bristol County, where District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III is not seeking reelection after serving in the role for over a decade, voters will see a race between Republican candidate Seth Aitken and Democratic candidate Christopher Markey, according to the secretary of state’s office.
Aitken, a first-time candidate from Swansea, is the first Republican to seek the Bristol DA’s office since 1974. Markey, a state representative from Dartmouth, previously worked under former Bristol District Attorney Paul Walsh Jr., who held the post for 16 years.
In Middlesex County, Democratic candidate David Solet, the former chief of the Middlesex County Cold Case Homicide Unit, will challenge Marian T. Ryan, who has held the office since 2013. Solet, a Cambridge resident, spent more than two decades working in the district attorney’s office before resigning in September to launch his campaign.
Democratic prosecutor Michael Giardino will challenge incumbent Robert Galibois in the Cape & Islands district attorney race. Incumbent district attorneys in Berkshire, Essex, Hampden, Worcester, Northwestern, and Plymouth counties are running unopposed, according to the list.
