Where to stream some of your favorite Jane Austen titles

Recently, I was thinking about all of the Jane Austen adaptations I’ve seen over the years, as I watched episodes of the BritBox series, “The Other Bennet Sister,” which imagines the life of middle sister Mary Bennet. The total came out to quite a few! As you wait for Netflix’s upcoming “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation, here’s where to stream a (by no means exhaustive) list of other Austen adaptations.

“Pride & Prejudice” (1995)

Though there were certainly earlier Jane Austen adaptations than this one, the BBC’s miniseries version may be somewhat to blame (honor?) for the ongoing fervor for all things Austen. Viewers swooned over Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy, to the point that he got cast, in a bit of meta commentary on his own work, as Mark Darcy in the “Bridget Jones” movie, itself a nod to the original’s plot (Mark, don’t insult Bridget at a party where she can overhear you). But the six episode series was also beloved for its faithfulness to the original book, and Jennifer Ehle’s work as Lizzy is no less impressive than Firth’s. Stream it on Hulu, Britbox, Peacock, Prime Video, and Disney+

“Pride & Prejudice” (2005)

Some of us remember the battles over whether the BBC version was better, or whether Joe Wright’s gorgeous, two hour film version is. The answer: Watch them both! Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley star in this one, which also boasts a beautiful piano-driven soundtrack from Jean-Yves Thibaudet that you can stream on Tidal or Spotify. Stream the film on Britbox

“Death Comes to Pemberley”

Both Matthew Rhys and Anna Maxwell Martin have shows on the go right now on Apple TV: Rhys in “Widow’s Bay,” and Maxwell Martin in the upcoming “Star City.” See them here as the now-married Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, solving a murder mystery at Pemberley. Stream it on PBS Passport

“Lost in Austen” (2008)

This miniseries imagines a modern woman who gets magically flung back in time (and fiction) to land in the world of “Pride & Prejudice,” where she finds Mr. Darcy even more appealing than Elizabeth does. Stream it on Peacock, BritBox, and YouTube

“Mansfield Park” (1999)

Fanny Price isn’t as feisty a hero as Elizabeth Bennet or Emma Woodhouse, but Patricia Rozema’s film adaptation finds plenty of subtext to give her heart and depth. It’s also a more adult Austen production than you often see; the film doesn’t shy away from the darker, less romantic elements of the author’s era, and is all the better for it. Available to rent on most streaming sites, but I bet your library can lend you a DVD, too.

“Sense and Sensibility” (1995)

Emma Thompson won an Oscar for writing this adaptation, which co-starred Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, and a very young Kate Winslet. But my fellow Austen nerds are probably charmed by the same piece of trivia about it that I am: In real life, Thompson married the actor (Greg Wise) who played the handsome cad, Mr. Willoughby. Stream it on MGM+ or BritBox

“Emma” (1996)

Controversially (or not?), I’m going to recommend the Gwyneth Paltrow/Jeremy Northam adaptation, because it’s my favorite of the bunch. Toni Collette as the hapless Harriet Smith? Alan Cumming as the peacocking Mr. Elton? What more could you want? Rent it on Prime Video

“Clueless” (1995)

Still the high-water mark for modernizing a Jane Austen story, despite the fact that 1995 is no longer that modern, the beloved Alicia Silverstone/Paul Rudd vehicle is an endlessly quotable classic. Stream it on Paramount+
