He goes on social media posting frenzies that often focus on his pet projects, gripes, and personal triumphs, including a 22-year-old newspaper review of his television show, \u201cThe Apprentice.\u201d But perhaps the most striking example came Tuesday, when Trump was asked whether the economic hardship Americans are feeling would motivate him to make a deal to end the war.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Get Starting Point<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><label>Enter Email<\/label><\/p>\n<div><button>Sign Up<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cNot even a little bit,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation,\u201d Trump continued, a stunningly frank admission that came after weeks spent either downplaying the conflict\u2019s economic toll or simply asking Americans to be patient. His only consideration, Trump said, was preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon: \u201cThat\u2019s all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That same day, the Labor Department reported that last month, inflation in the United States accelerated at its fastest rate in three years, and gas reached more than $4.50 a gallon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Democrats immediately seized on the remark, which will undoubtedly be used in attack ads during the midterm campaigns, and said it was a sign of the disconnect between the priorities of the president and those of the electorate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDonald Trump just said the quiet part out loud: he doesn\u2019t care about Americans who are struggling to make ends meet in his economy,\u201d Rosemary Boeglin, the communications director of the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Even Trump\u2019s allies struggled to defend the statement. Vice President JD Vance, asked this past week whether he agreed with the president, said: \u201cWell, I don\u2019t think the president said that, I think that\u2019s a misrepresentation of what the president said.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But in an interview with Fox News\u2019 Bret Baier, Trump doubled down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s a perfect statement,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d make it again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He acknowledged that there is a \u201cshort-term pain,\u201d associated with the war, but said, \u201cthe pain is much less than people thought.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The White House said that Trump was focused on defending the United States\u2019 longstanding security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe president\u2019s ultimate responsibility is the safety and security of Americans,\u201d said Steven Cheung, a White House spokesperson. \u201cIran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if action wasn\u2019t taken, they\u2019d have one, which threatens all Americans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Barrett Marson, a Republican strategist based in Arizona, said that the comment was a \u201ctruth bomb\u201d from Trump, akin to the president\u2019s well-known claim that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue without losing political support. But, he noted, this year\u2019s midterm elections are close and Republicans risk losing full control of Congress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe flaunted his wealth, and people didn\u2019t mind,\u201d Marson said. \u201cBut now it\u2019s sort of like: \u2018Wow, you\u2019re really not feeling our pain, you are adding to our pain, and on top of that, you don\u2019t care about our pain.\u2019 That could lead to political problems for him. He is not on the ballot, but this is an important ballot for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump is proudly a billionaire and built a populist message on standing up for those left behind. Most recently, his middle son Eric accompanied him to China, raising questions about the lines between government business and private enterprise. Eric Trump leads the Trump family business, which has flirted with Chinese business deals over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A new CNN poll found that 77 percent of Americans, including a majority of Republicans, thought Trump\u2019s policies had increased the cost of living in their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Inflation rose a startling 3.8 percent in April. The average price of gas has gone up more than 40 percent since the war with Iran started in February. And grocery prices soared faster in April than any month in nearly four years, driving up the cost of everything from tomatoes to seafood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>James Carville, longtime Democratic strategist who worked on former President Bill Clinton\u2019s campaign when he famously declared \u201cI feel your pain,\u201d said that Trump\u2019s declaration was at least not \u201cpandering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But, he added, it broke a cardinal political rule: Do not confirm an existing suspicion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s what lawyers call an admission against interest,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the greatest admission against interest in the history of the presidency.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Past administrations have taken a different strategy to address Americans facing high costs during wartime. While President George W. Bush would often point to economic gains during his wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he often expressed empathy for families and businesses who had to endure gas prices that increased to more than $4 during his tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou know, the words on how to define the economy don\u2019t reflect the anxiety the American people feel,\u201d he said during a 2008 Rose Garden news conference. \u201cYou know, the average person doesn\u2019t really care what we call it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who served as the chief economist for Bush\u2019s Council of Economic Advisers when the war in Afghanistan began, and is now president of the American Action Forum, said that the key difference between the two presidents\u2019 messaging was a disciplined communications strategy by both the president and his Cabinet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe mechanics were in place for the president to think about what he was getting people into,\u201d Holtz-Eakin said. \u201cTrump does everything himself, he\u2019s the chief spokesman. And there was no planning process for what might happen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>As pundits spent much of the week chewing over Trump\u2019s comment, the president was in China for a diplomatic trip.
