{"id":5352,"date":"2026-07-20T14:05:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T14:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=5352"},"modified":"2026-07-20T14:05:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T14:05:00","slug":"democratic-senators-send-letter-to-homeland-security-secretary-demanding-answers-on-recent-ice-shootings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=5352","title":{"rendered":"Democratic senators send letter to Homeland Security secretary demanding answers on recent ICE shootings"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<div>\n<p><span>Thirty-eight Democratic senators and an independent who caucuses with them wrote the head of Homeland Security on Sunday to demand numerous reforms to agency operations after recent fatal shootings by ICE agents in Houston and Biddeford, Maine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=5350\">Mass. residents are largely using AI, but have more concerns than excitement about it, poll shows<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>The letter, signed by independent Senator Angus King of Maine and 38 of his Democratic colleagues in the upper chamber, was addressed to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawmakers said the recent killings of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Sebastian Dur\u00e1n Guerrero in Biddeford were \u201ccompletely unacceptable\u201d and, coupled with past ICE shootings around the country, \u201cundermine confidence\u201d in law enforcement and endanger citizens. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>The letter, signed by several New England Democrats but not by either Senate Democrat from Massachusetts, said the deaths of Arajuo and Dur\u00e1n Guerrero carry troubling similarities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIn both incidents, the individuals were killed in enforcement actions in which they were not the intended targets,\u201d the senators wrote. \u201cFurthermore, both individuals were shot by DHS officials while inside a vehicle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In each case, DHS \u201cquickly issued statements asserting that officers were acting in self-defense, even before evidence of the facts surrounding the incidents had been gathered,\u201d the letter stated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, \u201cno DHS officials involved in these fatal shootings wore body-worn cameras\u201d during the deadly encounters, the letter said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The senators said Trump administration officials have repeatedly pledged to roll out body cameras for ICE agents but implementation has yet to occur. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The lawmakers said they\u2019re proposing reforms that are \u201cbased upon the standards applicable to virtually every law enforcement agency in the country (except immigration enforcement officers), including visibly displayed identification, no masks, and body-worn cameras.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=5348\">Trump says new Air Force One will be taken out of service to be \u2018maxed out\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Spokespersons for ICE and DHS didn\u2019t immediately respond to requests for comment on the senators\u2019 letter on Monday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The senators also put four questions to ICE in the letter: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2014 What is DHS\u2019s specific plan to respond to the public\u2019s interest in timely, transparent, and independently verified investigations into these incidents? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2014 What are the vetting procedures with respect to new ICE recruits? Does ICE consider records of domestic violence and abuse from family courts in its vetting? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2014 What immediate updates or reviews are being made to ICE vehicle pursuit and traffic stop policies, including enhanced training specifically applicable to traffic stops to ensure they prioritize public and officer safety? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u2014 Beyond the deployment of body-worn cameras, what additional oversight, reporting requirements, or public safety measures is the agency implementing? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The senators said they support efforts to remove violent criminals from the country, but that neither Araujo nor Dur\u00e1n Guerrero, a devoted father who worked multiple jobs, could be considered the \u201cworst of the worst\u201d by any stretch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe American people deserve clarity and accountability,\u201d the letter said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i>Material from previous Globe coverage was used in this report.
