We\u2019re just past the midpoint of 2026. The popular thing for critics to do these days is to give a rundown of the best films of the year so far. Throughout my career, I\u2019ve rejected this exercise, because the \u201cbest so far\u201d list may look nothing like my official annual 10 best list. Granted, anything that received four stars from me will find a definite place on that 10 best list; it\u2019s the 3\u00bd-star movies that concern me. <\/span><\/p>\n

My brain shouts at me: \u201cWhat about the rest of the movies this year? Don\u2019t they get a say? How can I judge without seeing those?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, all the cool kids are doing it, so I must follow suit and provide you a \u201cyear so far\u201d list. Peer pressure and all that jazz, you know. But, to quote Isabella Rossellini in \u201cDeath Becomes Her\u201d: \u201cNow a warning!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This is a numerically unranked list. I\u2019m starting with the three movies I\u2019ve given four stars to, because they\u2019re guaranteed inclusion in my end of the year ranking of the best films. Then, I\u2019ll list seven movies that I think deserve your attention.<\/span><\/p>\n
