Like, \u2018Oh, let me write another song about my father\u2019 \u2014 it doesn\u2019t work like that, you know?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Marley, 57, understands that everything comes in due time. When promoting \u201cBrightside\u201d earlier this year, he took to Instagram to reveal a story from his teen years: \u201cDaddy passed away on May 11, 1981. Across nine solo albums and 10 records with the Melody Makers \u2014 a family band that he led until the early aughts \u2014 \u201cMany Mourn for Bob\u201d is the first song of its kind in Marley\u2019s discography. The lyrics are about Marley\u2019s perspective as much as they are about his father, shedding a new light on Bob that could only come from someone who knew him outside of the context of fame. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Forms of light seem to be the best way to describe the contents of \u201cBrightside.\u201d (Despite being a son of the best-known reggae performer of all time, Marley said he doesn\u2019t \u201creally like the \u2018genre thing\u2019 so much\u201d when explaining his own work.) There\u2019s the expected stretches of undiluted sunshine (\u201cMake It Paradise,\u201d \u201cJAH We Give Glory\u201d), broken up by lightning-rod calls to action (\u201cHey People Now,\u201d which laments corruption and pollution, and the self-explanatory \u201cRacism Is A Killa\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBrightside\u201d is Marley\u2019s first album since 2020\u2019s \u201cMore Family Time,\u201d a kid-friendly effort that featured bigwigs across genres, such as Busta Rhymes, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Tom Morello, and Marley\u2019s brother Stephen. Afterwards he pivoted to film, working as a producer for \u201cBob Marley: One Love,\u201d the 2024 biopic that revisits challenging events from Bob\u2019s later years, such as an assassination attempt and his cancer diagnosis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy idea was for that movie was. . . to search for the emotional, human side of him,\u201d Marley said. \u201cNot how he became a star, not how he became a legend, not about how he\u2019s such a prolific songwriter and a prophet, or whatever \u2013 social justice and all these things \u2013 but what happened to him as a human being.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His work on the biopic didn\u2019t cause him to write \u201cMany Mourn for Bob\u201d \u2014 the song \u201cjust happened,\u201d Marley said \u2014 but its perspective mirrors that of the movie. The song opens with a sound bite of Bob speaking to an interviewer about the possibility of being murdered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI feel like it\u2019s appropriate that people hear him talk about himself in that way . . . because now everybody loves him, right?\u201d Marley said. \u201cBut there was a time when people wanted to kill him. So to hear it come from his voice, that\u2019s a human being talking to you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If \u201cMany Mourn for Bob\u201d is a teaching moment for listeners, then \u201cWhy Let The World\u201d is Marley\u2019s lesson for himself. The song, which features Trombone Shorty and Sheila E., is a respite that brings \u201csome joy for the sorrow,\u201d as the lyrics say, tempering the intensity of the album\u2019s sociopolitical subject matter. \u201cWhy let the world trouble me?\u201d he asks on the chorus. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That levity didn\u2019t come naturally. It\u2019s OK, it\u2019s all right. Tomorrow is another day. We\u2019re gonna get back in the fight.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Marley called the song \u201ctherapeutic\u201d and \u201clike a light\u201d (there\u2019s that theme again) as he worked on \u201cBrightside.\u201d \u201cAnytime I felt like [expletive], I would sing that song to myself.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s like taking back some control from the world of what\u2019s going on in my mind, in my home, in my heart,\u201d he added. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another particularly uplifting tune from Marley\u2019s catalog has been getting national attention lately. \u201cBelieve in Yourself,\u201d the song he recorded with the Melody Makers as the theme song for the beloved children\u2019s cartoon \u201cArthur,\u201d turns 30 this year. Many fans are only now realizing that it was Marley\u2019s voice encouraging them to \u201cListen to your heart\/Listen to the beat\/Listen to the rhythm\/The rhythm of the street.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI guess nobody watched the credits,\u201d he said. But Marley\u2019s taking the belated recognition in stride. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m very happy to be the one to have performed it and sang it, and, I mean, the message is right up my alley,\u201d he added. \u201cThey did a really great job in bringing that forward to me, and realizing that reggae music is children\u2019s music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNobody thought it would be this big a deal, though.
