NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. \u2014 Ryan Blaney is hoping to turn a hot streak into history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2023 Cup Series champion is hitting his stride with eight straight top 10 finishes, including\u00a0a win last week at Atlanta. That gives him plenty of momentum heading into Sunday night\u2019s much-hyped historic return to North Wilkesboro Speedway for the track\u2019s first championship points race in 30 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The .625-mile track sat dormant,\u00a0covered with overgrown bushes and weeds, for nearly a quarter century before being refurbished to host the NASCAR All-Star Race from 2023-25. This year\u2019s race, on the layout located about two hours north of Charlotte, is a sellout. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed coming here the last few years for the All-Star race, and I was excited when they announced that there was going to be a points race here,\u201d said Blaney, who will start on pole based on metrics after heavy rains washed out qualifying on Saturday. \u201cI feel like this place has done a really good job of revitalizing it, and the facilities. It\u2019s going to be a good show.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Blaney and his No. 12 Ford Mustang\u00a0were dominant last week,\u00a0leading 171 of 263 laps, and capturing all stage points to move into third place in the Cup standings. He is currently just 65 points behind points leader Denny Hamlin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blaney came out on a top after\u00a0a three-wide battle with Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell on the final lap of overtime\u00a0in a race that ended after midnight Sunday because of weather. And Blaney is favored by the odds-makers to win again this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blaney joins Bell, Chase Elliott, and Todd Gilliland as the drivers still alive entering for this week\u2019s semifinal round of the $1 million NASCAR In-Season Challenge. Blaney faces Bell, while Gilliland takes on Elliott in the head-to-head matchups.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elliott said winning would be nice, but admitted the In-Season Challenge is \u201cnot something that I\u2019m overly consumed over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cKind of similar to the points situation in general. If you\u2019re going out and you\u2019re doing your job and you\u2019re performing at a high level, then you\u2019re likely going to take care of the other things,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cSo I kind of look at that in a really similar light, but I do think it is really fun. I think it\u2019s a really good thing for just the sport, in general, to kind of have something else going on in the middle of the year.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The winner will be crowned next weekend at the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of the Chase, there are only six races remaining before the 16-driver field is established, meaning every point counts. Three of the next six races are at short tracks, beginning this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ryan Preece, driver of the No. 6 RFK Racing Ford, stands 26 points below the cutline and is looking to make up ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m biased, for sure, when it comes to short track racing and the racing that it provides, especially with the way the tire and all of that has gone,\u201d Preece said. \u201cSo, I feel really good about it. North Wilkesboro, Iowa, New Hampshire, those are all places that I\u2019ve had success at and I look forward to going to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But the struggles continue for Ross Chastain, as his No. 1 car failed inspection three times before practice Saturday, and he\u2019ll be required to serve a drive-thru penalty. He also lost a pit selection and a crew member. Chastain has had a tough season, entering the weekend in 20th place and 45 points below the Chase cutline.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, the cars for drivers Austin Hill and Connor Zilisch failed inspection twice. They also had a crew member ejected and will not be able to make pit selection.<\/span><\/p>\n
