SOUTHPORT, England \u2014 There were no \u201cI\u2019m so bad at golf\u201d exclamations from Rory McIlroy<\/b> this time.<\/span><\/p>\n

The puzzled looks, shakes of the head and sagging shoulders said it all.<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy was just 10 holes into his bid to win the British Open for the first time since 2014 and he was veering dangerously close to playing himself out of title contention.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Missing one putt from four feet wasn\u2019t necessarily unusual. But doing it three times? In the space of four holes?<\/span><\/p>\n

That trio of bewildering close-range mishaps \u2014 on Nos. 7, 8 and 10 \u2014 came either side of McIlroy driving the green to make birdie on the 415-yard No. 9. Go figure.<\/span><\/p>\n

And it pretty much summed up the world No. 2\u2019s wild late-afternoon ride in a 2-over 72 that included six bogeys and left him seven shots off the first-round lead, held surprisingly by 115th-ranked Jackson Suber<\/b> on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust too many stupid mistakes,\u201d McIlroy said \u2014 and he was specifically referring to his putting on greens he described as \u201cvery inconsistent\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI missed a couple early on that looked like they were going to break one way and they actually went another way, and then when you get the next one, you\u2019re over it and it\u2019s just very hard to trust that the ball is going to do what you think it\u2019s going to do. Then you maybe don\u2019t make quite as committed of a stroke.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy arrived at the Open after a seventh-place finish at the Scottish Open, where he went viral by shouting \u201cI\u2019m so bad at golf\u201d following a poor approach shot late in his final round.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sixth player \u2014 and only European \u2014 to complete the career Grand Slam rarely hides his emotions and he cut a frustrated figure for most of his round Thursday, not least when he chipped through the green and into a bunker at the par-5 No. 17.<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy managed to splash out to 8 feet while having one knee on the ground but a weakly struck par putt led to another dropped shot.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just hard to judge the speed sometimes,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making birdie at the tough last hole after a brilliant approach to 5 feet sparked shouts of \u201cRory, Rory\u201d from spectators in the grandstands and at least gave him something to cling to.<\/span><\/p>\n

He barely raised a smile, though, after plucking the ball out of the cup. One stat spoke volumes: he ranked 148th in putting in the 156-man field.<\/span><\/p>\n

McIlroy is playing a reduced schedule in 2026 and this is just his sixth event since winning the Masters for the second straight year, which moved his total of major titles to six.<\/span><\/p>\n

A win this week would tie him with Harry Vardon<\/b> as the European player with most majors in men\u2019s golf.<\/span><\/p>\n

He already has plenty of work to do, even if he tried to remain positive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we\u2019ll get the better conditions tomorrow and maybe the greens are a little bit smoother in the morning,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cGo out there and shoot a good one and get myself right back in it for the weekend.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown lights it up<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Dan Brown<\/b>, one of the few smokers in golf, went through \u201cseven or eight\u201d cigarettes during his 4-under 66 that left him tied for second place, one shot off the lead, after the first round at Royal Birkdale. <\/span><\/p>\n

After weeks of sunshine in this northwest corner of England, the fairways here are baked and parched \u2014 making them a potential fire hazard from discarded cigarettes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been making sure that they\u2019re out,\u201d the 31-year-old Englishman said reassuringly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not that he sounds too proud of a habit that makes him stand out on the circuit, but which he feels is needed to relieve some stress.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, Mum,\u201d he said with a cheeky smile.<\/span><\/p>\n

The burly and bearded Brown is an interesting character, not least because of the 10 tattoos on his body \u2014 three of which are of little birds \u2014 and his YouTube channel called \u201cBeersForeBogeys\u201d which has around 4,000 subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown first came into widespread consciousness in golf in 2024 when, as the world No. 272, he shot a 6-under 65 for the outright first-round lead in his British Open debut at Royal Troon.<\/span><\/p>\n

His name \u2014 one he shares with the author of \u201cThe Da Vinci Code\u201d \u2014 was a headline writer\u2019s dream and his dry humor proved popular, too. Brown was tied for second place heading into the final round at Troon and wound up in a tie for 10th.<\/span><\/p>\n

That experience taught him he could compete with the best players in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like I\u2019m a better player now to what I was back then, two years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Brown arrived at the Open with no form from his first year on the PGA Tour \u2014 he missed the cut in his last four events \u2014 but has immediately taken to the Birkdale links.<\/span><\/p>\n

He made seven birdies, including three straight around the turn, after being 1 over after seven holes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday a few putts dropped, which was nice to see,\u201d Brown said, \u201cbecause I\u2019ve not seen that for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Hopefully], I\u2019m in a sort of similar area on the leaderboard come Sunday.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That might mean continuing to have a smoke during his rounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere might be a big drop off by Sunday if I\u2019m not allowed,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Argentine golfer hears it<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Mateo Pulcini<\/b>, the only Argentine golfer in the British Open field, was playfully jeered by some spectators on the first tee, the morning after his national soccer team\u2019s epic 2-1 comeback win over England in the World Cup semifinals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pulcini delivered an amusing response a few hours later.<\/span><\/p>\n

After holing a 40-foot putt for birdie on the 18th green at Royal Birkdale, the 25-year-old amateur cupped both of his ears in a gesture to spectators that mimicked the celebration his countryman, Enzo Fernandez<\/b>, produced after scoring Argentina\u2019s 85th-minute equalizing goal on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was pretty excited and that came to my mind,\u201d he said, \u201cand I did it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pulcini, who shot a 5-over 75 in his British Open debut, stressed there were only \u201ca few boos\u201d on the first tee and that it was just a bit of fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are being great. Fans are being spectacular. They were cheering for me as well,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked what felt better \u2014 his putt on the 18th or seeing Fernandez\u2019s goal \u2014 Pulcini said: \u201cEnzo\u2019s goal, for sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A \u2018terrifying\u2019 tee shot<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Matthew Baldwin<\/b> had the honor of hitting the opening tee shot of the British Open at Royal Birkdale, where the Englishman has been a member for 23 years after growing up in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n

It meant needing a 3:30 a.m. alarm.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also meant missing one of his country\u2019s biggest ever soccer matches.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baldwin said he didn\u2019t watch England\u2019s agonizing 2-1 loss to Argentina in the men\u2019s World Cup semifinals, a match that started at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. He was dozing until waking up 55 minutes into the game and discovering England was leading, 1-0. <\/span><\/p>\n

He fell asleep and woke up again around midnight, to be informed by his wife that England lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

More important to Baldwin was making a good start to his fourth appearance at the Open \u2014 and first at Birkdale.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said the opening shot \u2014 an iron that split the middle of the parched fairway and was approved by a cheering crowd in a full grandstand under early morning sunshine \u2014 was \u201cterrifying\u201d and \u201coverwhelming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut,\u201d added Baldwin, who shot 2-over 72, \u201cit\u2019s something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
