Transfer station<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Wellesley sophomore quarterback <b>Jack Cullinan<\/b> is making the move to St. Mark\u2019s and reclassifying to 2029. The 6-foot, 180-pounder was recently named Day 2 MVP at Showdown VIII at Bryant University \u2014 also attended by Tabor\u2019s <b>Peter Bourque<\/b>, St. John\u2019s Prep\u2019s <b>Chris Vargas<\/b>, Hun School\u2019s <b>Lukas Prock<\/b> (Wellesley) and Milton Academy\u2019s <b>Hudson Garrity<\/b>, who became the youngest MVP in Showdown history.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>3. Coaching carousel<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa <b>Alexandria Petit<\/b> is making a professional move from Middleborough to Taunton to coach girls\u2019 basketball. Petit led the Sachems to the Division 2 tournament and finished 9-10 in her only season at the helm. Now she takes over for <b>Gretchen Rodrigues<\/b>, who led the Tigers to a 9-12 mark and a Division 1 tournament appearance in her fourth season. Petit played at Point Park Park University and Ursuline College, where she later served as an assistant coach. She is an eighth-grade teacher in the Taunton district.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa Brookline assistant <b>Julian Vesneske<\/b> will take over the girls\u2019 volleyball program at Acton-Boxborough. The former Brookline star from Holbrook played at Lasell and Emmanuel and served as an assistant at Newton South, Wellesley College, and UMass Boston. College corner<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa Harvard officially announced its incoming 2030 hockey recruiting class Thursday, which includes Lincoln\u2019s <b>Justin Graft<\/b>, who played at Rivers before joining the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL, and <b>Eli Heinze<\/b>, a California native who played two years at Governor\u2019s before joining the South Shore Kings of the NCDC. His father, <b>Steve Heinze<\/b>, played for Boston College and the Bruins and represented the United States in the 1992 Winter Games. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa MIT women\u2019s basketball welcomed Newton North graduates <b>Allie Danis<\/b>and <b>Nikki Rao<\/b> to its Class of 2030. Danis, a 5-9 combo guard, committed in March, and Rao, a 5-8 guard, made her commitment official in December.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>5. Here and there<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa Former Mansfield football star <b>TJ Guy<\/b> has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. The 6-4, 250-pound defensive end\/edge rusher from Brockton is coming off five years at Michigan, where he recording 66 tackles, 12.5 for loss, and 10 sacks in 48 games. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Ravens but was never rostered. He joins a Montreal team that is off to a 3-1 start coming off a loss in the 112th Grey Cup last November.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa Boston Latin sophomore <b>Elisa Maria Walker<\/b> earned her first call-up to the El Salvador Under-17 national soccer team. Walker, who plays with the Scorpoins U17 ECNL club, will join El Salvador for training camp and two international friendlies against Honduras. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>Weighty change<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa A recent change by the National Federation of High School State Associations that expands the permitted bat weights for high school players is sparking controversy. The NFHS unveiled several major rule changes for baseball and softball, including an oversized (18 inch) bag for first base that can be used instead of the double bag, which will be required in 2027, and softball pitchers can now wear one-way communication devices to hear from coaches in their dugout. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the most controversial is allowing bats with a \u201cdrop weight\u201d of minus-4, minus-5, and minus-6 starting in 2028, which means a bat can weigh up to six ounces less than its number of inches. For example, a 31-inch bat can weigh as little as 25 ounces. Previously, the drop weight was only minus-3. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cExpanding the available drop-weight options provides younger and developing players with additional opportunities to build proper mechanics, confidence and skills while maintaining the safety and performance standards expected in education-based athletics,\u201d said <b>Elliot Hopkins<\/b>, director of sports and liaison to the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While the MIAA plays under NFHS rules for the most part, it does allow sports to make their own modifications.
