It\u2019s been a whirlwind year so far for Taniya Nayak.<\/span><\/p>\n

She got an honorary doctorate from Boston Architectural College, is renovating a home with 98 Degrees alum Drew Lachey, and designing yet another Massachusetts restaurant. And Nayak \u2014 make that Dr. Nayak\u2014 is not slowing down. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m working on my bathrooms now. But as I\u2019m talking to you, I\u2019m looking around thinking: I need new drapes,\u201d Nayak said from her Milton home. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

HGTV fans, know Nayak from shows including \u201cDesigned to Sell,\u201d \u201cBuild It Forward,\u201d \u201cHouse Hunters on Vacation,\u201d \u201cUrban Oasis,\u201d \u201cHGTV Showdown,\u201d and \u201cBattle on the Beach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Weymouth High School alum just wrapped Season 7 of HGTV\u2019s \u201cRock the Block,\u201d which saw her team up with Lachey to renovate a Las Vegas home.<\/span><\/p>\n

With her husband Brian O\u2019Donnell, Nayak co-owns and has designed several Massachusetts and Rhody restaurants, including Lower Mills Tavern, Yellow Door Taqueria, Madre Osteria, Moonshine Alley, and Esther\u2019s High Dive. She also starred on Food Network\u2019s \u201cRestaurant: Impossible\u201d for 23 seasons. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak also designs luxury residential homes with her Boston-based company Taniya Nayak Design \u2014 including one for Hockey Hall of Famer Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins.<\/span><\/p>\n

She chatted about her career, design tips, and the honorary doctorate that \u201ctook the cake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This doctorate is so full-circle. You told me BAC got you your first TV job, when the dean sent out a mass e-mail about casting for ABC Family\u2019s<\/b> \u201cKnock First<\/b>.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes! Right out of the gates. I said to them at the ceremony: \u201cYou guys really<\/i> changed my life.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

I always wanted to be a designer. My dad was an architect and small business owner [Braintree-based architecture firm, B.D. Nayak Architects & Planners]. He said, \u2018I\u2019d like to see you go into business.\u2019 So I did my undergrad in business marketing at UMass-Lowell, then worked for several years at jobs I wasn\u2019t great at because my heart wasn\u2019t in it. I went back to school at BAC for my Masters and I\u2019m so glad I did. <\/span><\/p>\n

On<\/b> HGTV\u2019s \u201cRock the Block<\/b>,\u201d you were paired with Drew Lachey. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: From 98 Degrees! He was the sweetest guy, such a hard worker. <\/span><\/p>\n

Even though you\u2019re a New Kids on the Block girl?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: He would give me so much [explative] about it, because people told me, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re a boy band person. You must be excited about working with Drew.\u2019 He\u2019d say: \u2018Just tell them the truth. You\u2019re a New Kids person.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of New Kids, I<\/b> interviewed Jordan and Jon<\/b> when they competed on \u201cRock the Block.\u201d Jordan told me he sees you at the Milton Starbucks all the time.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: Yes! We\u2019re Milton people, so we always run into each other. It\u2019s surreal because I was such <\/i>a New Kids fan growing up. In Vegas, our whole HGTV group went to the New Kids concert and had the best time.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

I want to ask for some design tips. I\u2019ll start with the room you won on \u201cRock the Block \u201d \u2014 a multi-generational suite. How did you approach that?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: We addressed it like a hotel suite. I design restaurants, and my whole M.O. on the show was to bring a hospitality flare. Your favorite hotel room, your favorite restaurant \u2014 bring that into your home so you feel that energy. When you\u2019re looking at a hotel or restaurant online, nine times out of 10, you\u2019re judging it solely on design. You\u2019re dissecting those photos and seeing what you gravitate towards. <\/span><\/p>\n

We went out on a limb and color-drenched [the suite]. Drew and I are the most neutral-color-palette-people you\u2019ll ever meet. But I thought, \u2018I\u2019d love this color in a hotel room.\u2019 We did a playful headboard. We wanted that boutique, bougie hotel vibe. <\/span><\/p>\n

You designed the wall-covering?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: Yes! So I have a wall covering line [for Len-Tex and MDC Interior Solutions] and \u201cRock the Block\u201d was its big TV debut. <\/span><\/p>\n

Your wall-coverings are also in some Marriott and Hilton hotels.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: That was my dream. I thought, if I have a wall-covering, I want it to be something a hotel might want for hallways or bedrooms. I also have a tile line with Genrose Stone + Tile based in Connecticut. So the multi-generational suite had my tile in the kitchen and one of my wall coverings in the suite itself. That was exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n

I saw you went antiquing at Brimfield Fair.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: It\u2019s incredibly overwhelming, but each year, I learn a little more. I suggest spending a night. The first day, walk around and note what you like. On day two, make your purchases. Bring a wagon, bring cash, wear comfortable shoes, bring blankets to wrap items in your car. <\/span><\/p>\n

What are some other locations you use locally?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: Manzel [in Peabody] is awesome. They have pieces from Morocco, India, Mexico. Really cool pieces that look aged and beautiful: gorgeous hand-carved pieces, chairs, textiles. <\/span><\/p>\n

I was looking at your<\/b> residential portfolio<\/b> \u2014 you\u2019ve got gorgeous houses. Two are in New England.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: Newton was actually Boston Bruin Patrice Bergeron\u2019s house, but they\u2019ve since moved. At the time, they were just starting their family, so they grew their family in that home. They\u2019re the sweetest people. The intent was to be a bit modern with a timeless appeal.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Seabrook, New Hampshire \u2014as we\u2019re talking about bringing hospitality into the home \u2014 the owners own a restaurant; they\u2019re big on entertaining, and they wanted a house with enough space. They wanted it to speak to this area, with a charm that wasn\u2019t completely modern \u2014 so the windows have details, for example. They were willing to take risks and go outside the box a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Any tips for refreshing a room on a budget?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: Change out lighting. New rugs or paint can change a room. <\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be surprised how many different ways there are to refinish a cabinet \u2014 changing out the hardware can give it an entirely <\/i>new look. Make sure you find hardware that matches the holes already there. You\u2019ll save the headache of patching holes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most importantly: Don\u2019t rush into it. Everybody wants to do it tomorrow. It takes a long t<\/i>ime to gather ideas, source items, find the right person to install it, etc. Be patient. It\u2019ll be worth it in the end. I do these things on TV overnight. But in real life, it\u2019s been over a year that I\u2019ve been trying to get my bathrooms done.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pivoting to your restaurants, you just finished<\/b> Sorella Cucina Toscana<\/b>, for a client, in Burlington, Mass. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: We\u2019re doing another project with [Tuscan Brands] in Kenmore Square [Buitoni Spaghetti Bar slated to open spring 2027]. We\u2019re also doing a smaller project, for Mumbai Spice in Boston.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are your next goals?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Nayak<\/b>: I\u2019d like to keep expanding on licensing and branding. I\u2019m really enjoying that process. I\u2019m working on a lighting line right now with Studio M. I\u2019m doing sketches. I love it. <\/span><\/p>\n
