Federal prosecutors on Friday filed more charges against a state lawmaker from Cape Cod they accused of stealing cash from a former employer, alleging he took thousands of more dollars than he was originally charged with and that he also failed to report the stolen funds on his personal tax returns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Authorities last year arrested state Representative Christopher Flanagan, a Dennis Port Democrat, on charges that he stole tens of thousands of dollars from the Home Builders Association in Cape Cod, concealed the thefts, and then used the money to pay down mortgage bills, bankroll his House campaign, and pay for a psychic.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a new indictment, US Attorney Leah Foley\u2019s office alleged Flanagan also did not report the stolen funds on his personal tax returns over three years and failed to disclose thousands of dollars of rental income he collected on his 2023 tax returns.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Foley\u2019s office also accused Flanagan, 38, of stealing more than $44,000, roughly $8,000 more than prosecutors originally charged the state lawmaker with siphoning last year. Prosecutors said they uncovered four transactions between February 2021 and December 2023 in which Flanagan wired money from the associations\u2019 bank account to his personal account.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan\u2019s attorney, Greg Henning, declined to comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The state lawmaker asked a federaljudge last month to dismiss a charge of falsifying expense reports that he gave to officials at the Office of Campaign and Political Finance. A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday on the motion to dismiss, but it was unclear Friday if it will take place after prosecutors filed their new indictment. <\/span><\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors on Friday also accused Flanagan of underreporting rental income he earned in 2023. Flanagan rented out a property in Dennis Port twice in 2023, once using a third-party vacation rental company and later directly to an individual, according to court documents. <\/span><\/p>\n

Prosecutors alleged that Flanagan falsely reported $15,000 in gross rental income on his 2023 tax return when he actually pulled in more than $31,000.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan also reported roughly $144,120 in expenses on his 2023 tax return related to his Dennis Port property. That included falsely listing $35,600 in \u201clegal and professional services\u201d and $25,000 for \u201ctransportation\u201d expenses, even though the property is less than 4 miles from his home, according to federal prosecutors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan allegedly failed to disclose tens of thousands of dollars he embezzled from the Home Builders Association in Cape Cod, where he served as executive director, as well as $285 in stolen company funds he used to pay for \u201cpersonal psychic services\u201d on his personal tax returns for 2021, 2022, and 2023, the US Attorney\u2019s office said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Foley\u2019s office said Friday that Flanagan would appear in a federal court in Boston \u201cat a later date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan was first elected to the Massachusetts House in 2022, and was reelected to a second term in 2024. <\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan has not said publicly whether he would run again, but it appears he will not seek another term. <\/span><\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Secretary of State William Galvin\u2019s office said Friday that Flanagan has not pulled papers from the state to run for reelection. The deadline to file papers with local election officials was April 28, the spokesperson said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan has remained in office despite facing a wave of calls to resign from his House seat after he was first arrested. Governor Maura Healey previously said the accusations against him cast \u201cdoubt on his ability to faithfully serve his constituents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Asked for comment Friday, a spokesperson for House Speaker Ron Mariano referred the Globe to a statement last year from state Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian, the chair of the House Ethics Committee, who said the chamber planned to open its own investigation into Flanagan after his federal criminal case ends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flanagan had resigned from the trade association in May 2024, including after state campaign finance regulators separately fined him $15,000 for violations tied to his successful 2022 campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

The said Flanagan had created an alias known as \u201cJeanne Louise\u201d to hide his role in paying for a mailer in support of his campaign that purportedly came from a group called \u201cConservatives for Dennis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In winning the First Barnstable District, Flanagan flipped a seat long held by Republicans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two other Democrats have since announced campaigns. Chris Lambton, a Democrat from Dennis and former television personality, and Steven Leibowitz, a Brewster Democrat, said they would run for the seat.<\/span><\/p>\n
