His years of complaining about the lack of respect, playing second fiddle to Jayson Tatum and his contributions to the franchise’s success being overlooked, were valid because here we are.

Read more Mass. lawmakers, embracing ‘unique commonality,’ send Healey $63 billion budget plan

President of basketball operations Brad Stevens pulled off the most controversial, stunning, and perhaps worst trade in the history of the franchise when he sent Brown to the rival 76ers for the aging Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks.

The trade is an indication Stevens and the brass wanted Brown out of Boston, regardless of the return. And this 10-day menagerie where Brown was initially offered to Milwaukee for Giannis Antetokounmpo, then all the other 28 teams for what was deigned to be a terrible, unwanted contract and draft capital, has ended.

But the criticism of Stevens and this so-called pristine Celtics culture has begun, because this deal can be considered terrible even to the most novice of basketball fans. Brown was a five-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA player who is entering his prime.

Get Starting Point

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.

Enter Email

George, once one of the league’s top stars, has been besieged by injuries in recent years and was part of another ridiculous trade seven years ago, when he was sent by the Thunder to the Clippers for a prospect named Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. If you missed the ending of that story, Gilgeous-Alexander has won two MVPs and a championship for Oklahoma City.

As for Brown, it concludes a successful 10-year run in Boston where he transformed into a superstar, teamed with Tatum to win a championship, and uplifted the Celtics into annual contenders. His era concludes with the Celtics completely botching their relationship with him, and soiling his reputation on the way out.

We have no idea why the Celtics were so eager to trade Brown, even if it meant taking one of the league’s worst contracts in return, but they were more aggressive in moving him after the Bucks accepted Miami’s offer for Antetokounmpo.

The sad part? Brown never asked for a trade. He wanted to make things work in Boston, but of course had issues with perhaps how the team was coached in that painful playoff series loss to the 76ers. Brown spoke his mind. He was popular in the community. He started a STEM program in Boston. He embraced his time here, and yet was thrown out and put on the curb like a stained couch with cigarette burns.

This is a terrible look for the Celtics, and not even the poised and congenial Stevens can explain this with a straight face. You don’t treat a 10-year veteran, perhaps a candidate for a jersey retirement, this way.

Read more Is hiring picking up in the US? Thursday’s report will help illustrate trends.

That 2031 unprotected first-round pick from the 76ers means nothing in 2026. That prospect is currently 14 years old and probably prepping for his AAU season.

Related: Celtics dip into free agency pool, agree to deals with NBA champion Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley Jr.

There is no reason not to keep Brown for at least another season if this is the return. George has two more years on that bloated, four-year, $212 million contract with a player option for 2027-28 for $56.5 million that he will certainly pick up.

It was a porous deal the moment he signed it. There was a reason why the Clippers refused to even approach that number when he became a free agent, but yet he’s now a Celtic. The fan base is supposed to buy that this team is chasing a title? That’s mumbo jumbo.

The Bill Chisholm era has been filled with nothing but cost cutting since he purchased the team less than a year ago. It’s one thing to pass on signing Brown to that two-year, $141 million deal he was eligible for later this month, and it’s another to send him to a conference rival to boost its championship chances while you’re left with a 36-year-old who was suspended 25 games last season for violating the league’s drug policy.

This is a stain on the Celtics and Stevens’ legacy, and there’d better be a subsequent move to appease a confused and sullen fanbase that at least wanted to get value for Brown. Stevens and the brass couldn’t even get a prospect back. How about the 76ers’ first-round pick? How about one of their two-way players? Somebody besides George that could somehow make this trade more digestible.

Instead, the Celtics went from an embarrassing first-round loss to the 76ers — blowing a 3-1 lead against a team with its best player on one leg — to an awkward, perplexing, and rather troubling stretch where they dangled their second-best player around the league for what resulted in spare parts.

Celtics faithful is supposed to believe this will make the team better in the long-term? Trading a player who was not only productive on the floor, but impactful off the floor, for a bad contract and picks is a nightmare. A bad dream for any loyal fan who truly believes this franchise is all about winning.

The last 13 months have proven that maybe winning isn’t the main priority in Boston. For some reason, the Celtics brass decided Jaylen Brown had to go. And instead of revising their thinking when his trade value began to wane, they doubled down and pulled off a ghastly deal that does nothing but create doubt, as to whether the Celtics are in this for the right reasons.

Read more Follow live updates on the Trump administration

It certainly doesn’t seem that way.

The criticism of Brad Stevens and this so-called pristine Celtics culture has begun, because this deal can be considered terrible even to the most novice of basketball fans

[7

post-4065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sport
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
