But that is missing the point.

Read more Massachusetts lawmakers, promising a tidier close to their session, still have a lot they want to get done

It is true that Democratic Socialist-affiliated candidates are having a moment. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has the highest favorability among active American politicians. New York and Seattle elected Democratic Socialist mayors last fall. Washington, D.C., is poised to join them this year. Los Angeles has a Democratic Socialist in the runoff for mayor. Three Democratic Socialists won US House primaries in New York City last week, joining other nominees in New Jersey and Philadelphia. On Tuesday in Colorado, it happened again with a 29-year-old Democratic socialist toppling a 30-year incumbent for the US House.

In the grand scheme of things nationally, this is still a very small percentage of Democratic nominees or officeholders. But the fact that it is happening at all raises the question of what exactly is going on here. The answer may not be what you expect.

Get Starting Point

A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.

Enter Email

Claims are consistently made that this is simply a story about Democrats moving further to the left. The explanation is that progressives have been emboldened by just how far to the right first the Tea Party and then the MAGA movement pushed the Republican Party. If they can do it, why not the Democrats?

There is some truth to that. But there is more going on.

The root of all of this is that it is becoming increasingly clear to many voters that the status quo is not working for them and that the political establishment in both parties is failing to do its job by responsibly leading the nation.

From the 1990s to the early 2010s, elections were decided by a shrinking number of independent voters who basically voted for a different party every two years to register their frustration and change parties.

Now there are fewer actual voters willing to vote for the other side, and if they want change, they are turning inward.

The Republican establishment lost its battle to President Trump years ago.

The choice facing Democratic primary voters this year is essentially this: pick between a candidate who authentically has a plan and one whose central message is simply oppose Trump.

While most, if not nearly all, Democrats agree that opposing Trump is a good thing, simply running on an anti-Trump message is no longer enough. It is also an incredibly lazy political strategy. Democratic base voters increasingly want to know what their party is for, not just what it is against.

Read more With Franklin Arias dominating Double-A, the obvious question is: When will he get promoted to the WooSox?

After all, opposing Trump does nothing to address the cost of housing or inflation (beyond arguing that tariffs are bad). It does nothing to expand access to health care or address student debt. Nor has it offered a new approach on Israel, where 66 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of independents believe the United States should be less supportive of its longtime ally, according to a recent Quinnipiac poll.

Democratic Socialists, by contrast, are offering specifics as part of a bold, affirmative agenda. They want to halt offensive weapons sales to Israel and other countries they believe abuse human rights. They support Medicare for All. They advocate for free public college tuition, universal child care, and the idea that housing is a right.

To be sure, many Democrats disagree with those proposals. But many of those same Democrats are also not offering their own compelling vision for addressing child care, health insurance, the cost of college, housing affordability, or a changing foreign policy landscape. Too often, they begin and end the conversation by explaining why progressive ideas are unrealistic rather than presenting ambitious (possibly more market-driven) alternatives of their own.

That is a problem for centrist Democrats, who should be expected to offer their own innovative policy solutions instead of beginning every conversation with what is “reasonable” or what represents an acceptable compromise. Primary voters generally do not rally behind compromise as an aspiration, especially when that party has the wind at their back, as Democrats do this midterm election.

This cautious posture also carries an unintended message: that establishment Democrats are the grown-ups in the room who alone understand electability. Yet that argument is coming from the same faction whose presidential candidates have lost to Trump twice and whose leaders have struggled to develop an effective political response to his unconventional presidency. Maybe, some Democratic voters are saying, their leaders don’t “got this.”

Ironically, the person who might best understand the current dynamic is former president Bill Clinton, who launched his centrist presidential campaign 15 days before New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was born.

Clinton famously told Democrats, “When people feel uncertain, they’d rather have someone strong and wrong than weak and right.”

At the moment, the Democratic establishment is losing traction because it has been perceived as electorally weak. And by relying primarily saying they are not Trump, they have failed to persuade many of the party’s own voters why its vision for the country’s future is right. Until that changes, candidates who are well funded and offer a clear, affirmative agenda — even one many Democrats ultimately reject — will continue to have an advantage in Democratic primaries.

Read more Trump to visit newly built Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota’s Badlands

The choice facing Democratic primary voters this year is essentially this: pick between a candidate who authentically has a plan and one whose central message is simply oppose Trump.

[2

post-4009","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics

Democrats don’t have a socialism problem.
