WASHINGTON \u2014 Federal law enforcement authorities are preparing for one of Washington, D.C.\u2019s largest and most complex security operations as the nation\u2019s capital gears up to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the nation\u2019s freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n

With rising political violence, including recent incidents near the White House, and a president who enjoys being at the center of public pomp yet has repeatedly faced attempts on his life, a major security challenge awaits.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt comes as no surprise to you that D.C. on a normal day is a target-rich environment,\u201d said Darren B. Cox, assistant director in charge of the FBI\u2019s Washington Field Office, at a recent press conference detailing the security preparations. \u201cWe are prepared for any threats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to visit Washington in the coming weeks for the festivities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The throngs will be joined by thousands of law enforcement officers and agents and 5,000 National Guard troops, along with military-style vehicles and other hardware they don\u2019t often see on the streets of America.<\/span><\/p>\n
