He\u2019s also been creating art for more than 40 years, from sculptures to sketches, and he\u2019s finally ready to show them to the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3806\">\u2018Avatar: Fire and Ash,\u2019 plus more new movies and TV shows to watch this weekend<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>His first exhibition in his home state, \u201cGraven Images: Stone, Wood, Copper, Steel, Bone,\u201d will be on display until Oct. 12 at the Monson Arts Gallery. The pieces, which range from copper etchings and stone sculptures to early concept sketches, don\u2019t just display a local talent, but are a full-circle moment showing art in its place of origin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Born in Bangor, Rothschild now lives on and tends to a 200-year-old farm on Tory Hill in western Maine. He doesn\u2019t silo himself to any one field. Sometimes he\u2019s a farmer tending to cows, chickens, ducks, and hogs. Other times, he\u2019s an orchardist reviving a once-believed-to-be-extinct variety of apple. And in between, he\u2019s an artist drawing from the nature around him. Sculptures are one of the things that we do,\u201d he said in an interview with the Globe. \u201cThey all seem to be part and parcel of the same organic thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His art reflects his deep love for Maine\u2019s nature, which stems from a childhood passion for animals. \u201cThey\u2019re my fellow creatures,\u201d he said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a theory that I\u2019m doing, and it\u2019s not abstract. It\u2019s my life, and it\u2019s their lives, and it\u2019s material.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He isn\u2019t just inspired by the surrounding nature, but rather uses it in his craft as well. The exhibition\u2019s centerpiece is a 3,000-pound, 13-foot stone sculpture of a halibut carved out of slate from Monson itself. The other works in the exhibition depict sturgeons, moose, elk, turkeys, and rams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t feel the need of going a long way away to find the stuff that is what I want to do,\u201d he said. \u201cMaine seems to have everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many of the exhibition\u2019s pieces have been housed at Rothschild\u2019s farm for years. Historian and biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin has been a close friend of Rothschild for over 50 years. When she would visit his farm, she remembers seeing art everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSome of them would be in what was his study, some might be still in the barn, others were in various stages of being worked on,\u201d she said. \u201cThey weren\u2019t displayed in a museum-like setting, but they were hugely impactful when you saw them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Parting ways with his art pieces wasn\u2019t an easy decision for Rothschild, noting how the farm feels empty without them. \u201cIt feels sort of lonely. I mean, they\u2019re part of the house,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3804\">Paraguay at a glance: La Albirroja rediscover their stingy game with back-to-back shutouts<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Chantal Harris, director of the Monson Arts Gallery, described the pieces as breathing life into \u201cthese images [that] have been stuck in [Rothschild\u2019s] head for his whole life.\u201d With this being his first exhibition in the States, it\u2019s a special moment for the gallery to host art that has strong connections to the surrounding area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt can be really scary to part with your artwork that you\u2019ve held so close for so long,\u201d she said. \u201cWe really feel honored that he put the trust into us to put this on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Saturday, the Monson Arts Gallery hosted a reception to welcome and celebrate the new exhibition, including remarks from Goodwin to introduce Rothschild and the pieces. She noted how many tears were shed throughout the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was an extraordinary night, and it was partly just all being together and celebrating what we had always hoped would happen before, but he was finally ready for it to happen now,\u201d Goodwin said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For her, the exhibition couldn\u2019t be a more harmonious opening to his work. While Monson is a small town of 650 people, Rothschild\u2019s art is a direct reflection of being inspired by Maine\u2019s nature. \u201cIt just seemed like the perfect place for it to have its beginning,\u201d Goodwin said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the reception, Rothschild was drawn to how people can come together to have a shared \u201clove of life.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cChildren look at these things, and they get excited.
