Not so fast, says Craig Breslow."},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<div>\n<p><span>DENVER \u2014 Inside the six-week countdown to the trade deadline, hours after the Red Sox\u2019 worst loss of the season, <b>Craig Breslow<\/b> was not ready Tuesday afternoon to wave the white flag on the season and declare that his club will be a seller at the deadline. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3494\">Four things to know about Celtics 2026 first-round NBA Draft pick Chris Cenac Jr.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>He knows, though, the long odds the Red Sox face as the owners of the second-worst record (31-45) in the American League entering the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ll be realistic and do what is best for the organization,\u201d Breslow said before the Red Sox\u2018 5-2 win over the Rockies. \u201cBut I still think that we\u2019re capable of playing better and stacking some wins together and hope that we can do that in the [coming days and weeks].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>The wait-and-see-for-now approach \u2014 with the trade deadline not until Aug. 3 \u2014 colored the insight on related topics.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Get Starting Point<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><label>Enter Email<\/label><\/p>\n<div><button>Sign Up<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Would it benefit the Sox to try to jump the market, to decide on being sellers in a year when there may not be many teams taking that approach, and see if they can extract the greatest value sooner rather than later?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe first thing we need to do is take care of what\u2019s happening here and do everything we can to figure out how to play better baseball and stack some wins together,\u201d Breslow said. \u201cAfter that, when teams make the decision to sell off players, particularly those that are maybe on expiring contracts, you try to get the best return you possibly can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSometimes that\u2019s available early. Sometimes you don\u2019t know what a team is truly willing to pay up until you\u2019re closer to the deadline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Red Sox don\u2019t have many pending free agents, particularly aside from starter <b>Sonny Gray<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>What happens at the MLB Draft Combine? More than 300 prospects will be under review.<\/div>\n<p><span>How does Breslow view players who are under contract for 2027 (and beyond)? And how do we position ourselves to have the best 2027 possible? If that\u2019s where things go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>Sore foot sidelines Mayer<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span><b>Marcelo Mayer<\/b> was out of the lineup for the middle game of the series because of a sore left foot, interim manager <b>Chad Tracy <\/b>said. He fouled a pitch off of the foot Monday and afterward walked with a limp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBetween that and the lefty [starting for Colorado], we felt like let\u2019s just keep him off it and make sure he starts feeling better,\u201d Tracy said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The middle infielder recently has missed one-off games because of a stiff neck\/back, an illness, and now the sore foot.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>Tracy goes with Guerrero <\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>With a two-run lead in the seventh inning Monday, Tracy went with <b>Tyron Guerrero <\/b>over the usual seventh-inning man, <b>Justin Slaten<\/b>, on a night when the Red Sox had a full complement of relievers available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Why? Because Guerrero already had warmed up in the sixth inning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFirst of all, I trust both of them,\u201d Tracy said. \u201cTy was warming up, fully hot. Like the matchup with either of them. Rather than sit him down and you\u2019ve got a guy fully hot and you get another guy fully hot and you end up using both of them, bring him [Guerrero] into the game, let him do the job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>As the Red Sox struggle, checking in on several former players across the league<\/div>\n<p><span>Guerrero, a 35-year-old in the majors for the first time since 2019, owns a 3.65 ERA in 13 appearances. Tracy counted the righthander among the Sox\u2019 high-leverage options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re in an enviable position as far as when all of them are available,\u201d he said. \u201cYou got four of those guys, plus a lefty specialist in Danny [Coulombe], to choose from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>No physical issue for Chapman <\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span><b>Aroldis Chapman<\/b> and Tracy downplayed the idea that a physical issue impacted the closer in his blown save Monday. Chapman, further, indicated his sore left hamstring is no longer a factor. \u201cI\u2019ve had a couple days where I\u2019m running full speed and things felt good,\u201d he said through an interpreter . . . <b>Romy Gonzalez<\/b> hopes to be activated for his season debut Saturday against the Yankees, the infielder told reporters in Worcester. He went 1 for 4 (single) as the DH for the Triple-A WooSox in the resumption of his rehab assignment Tuesday \u2026 In the same game, lefthander <b>Patrick Sandoval<\/b> tossed 3\u2153 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits. He struck out one and walked one.
