Soccer fans hoping to watch England\u2019sWorld Cup matchwhile enjoying apint at The Dubliner on Tuesday afternoon were greeted bya surprise. The doors were locked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClosed today to give staff a break,\u201d read ahandwritten note taped to the entrance of the Irish pub in downtown Boston that became a central gathering place for Scotland\u2019s Tartan Army during games. <\/span><\/p>\n

After weeks of jubilant Scottish fans filling the bar to cheer on their team, charming locals with their signature kilts and impenetrable accents, staff needed a day to recover, its operators explained in an Instagram post.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve worked incredibly hard over the last two weeks and deserve it,\u201d read The Dubliner\u2019s post. \u201cThankfully there\u2019s nothing happening in Boston today so we will be back tomorrow. #noscotlandnoparty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

News of the closure, which coincided with England facing off against Ghana at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, quickly circulated on social media. Many assumed the caption was a playful dig at English fans. England and Ireland have a long-standing rivalry on the pitch \u2014 in addition to their age-old conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dubliner giving their staff the day off on England\u2019s match day at Boston Stadium is elite-level trolling,\u201d commented one person on X. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is absolutely first class!! Scotland appreciates you more than you know,\u201d another commenter wrote on Instagram. \u201cGenius move.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

A thirdquipped that the pub was giving staff the \u201cday off to make sure they see every minute of the mighty 3 lions,\u201d referring to England\u2019s team. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone who gets the joke,\u201d the pub responded with the raising-hands emoji. <\/span><\/p>\n

Turns out, the timing of the temporary shuttering really was just a humorous coincidence. Aidan McGee, executive chef and partner at The Dubliner, said there was no grand anti-England conspiracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe staff\u2019s pretty exhausted,\u201d said McGee, who hails from Donegal in Ireland. \u201cIt\u2019s been an absolutely crazy two weeks. We just have to choose a day, and it so happened to be the day England\u2019s playing.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The pub has spent much of the tournament packed shoulder-to-shoulder withScottish visitors, whose roaring chants and beer-fueled singalongs helped turn downtown Boston into a temporary outpost for the Highlands. <\/span><\/p>\n

Some local bars and liquor stores ran out of their most popular beers during the Tartan Army invasion. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Dubliner did not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s amateur hour,\u201d McGee joked. \u201cAn Irish pub running out of beer? Absolutely not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, business has been relentless. The World Cup crowds have generated sales on par with St. Patrick\u2019s Day \u2014 every day, McGee said. The rush has left staff in need of a breather, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now staff are gearing up for \u201chopefully, maybe, the Scottish coming back,\u201d McGee said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ireland didn\u2019t qualify for the tournament, a reality he said would have made hosting matches in Boston \u201cabsolutely magical.\u201d But now, like much of Boston, he said he has a \u201csoft spot\u201d for Scotland. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey give a whole lift to the city,\u201d McGee said. \u201cIt was amazing to have them here.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n
