E<\/span><\/span>llice Patterson, executive and artistic director of Abilities Dance Boston, has been enamored with ballet since she was a child. However, despite her lifelong love of the craft, she noticed a blatant lack of accessible studios where disabled dancers could rehearse and perform. So, she decided to do something about it. In 2017, Patterson founded Abilities Dance Boston, a studio where differently-abled dancers could thrive. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This Juneteenth weekend, Abilities Dance Boston is bringing a fresh take on Igor Stravinsky\u2019s \u201cThe Firebird\u201d to Boston University\u2019s Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre, starring Patterson as the Firebird. This is Abilities Dance Boston\u2019s second rendition of the ballet; \u201cFirebird, Part 2\u2033 is an even more radical reimagining.<\/span><\/p>\n

The original ballet chronicles the tale of a captured firebird\u2019s struggle to free herself from Ivan, her captor. However, in Ivan\u2019s time of need, the Firebird returns to save him. Running through June 21, \u201cFirebird, Part 2\u2033 begs the question, \u201cWhat happens when the Firebird stops saving everyone else \u2014 and saves herself?”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
