Maybe you noticed, maybe you didn\u2019t, but it is true that I took a swipe or fired off a gripe about Fox\u2019s decision to include perma-smug Alexi Lalas<\/b> on its main studio program in every story I\u2019ve written about the World Cup so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, I\u2019m here to offer sort of a mea culpa<\/i> for that now. Lalas\u2019s stint \u2014 which may be over, or at least abbreviated \u2014 has been highly entertaining, for one reason that has nothing to do with his analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n

His more accomplished fellow analysts \u2014 France legend Thierry Henry<\/b> and comically blunt Swedish icon Zlatan Ibrahimovi\u0107<\/b> \u2014 have been just as annoyed with Lalas\u2019s hot takes, how he basks in agitating people, and his delight in sucking the air out of the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Best of all, they do not hide it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most obvious example occurred on Tuesday, following France\u2019s victory over Senegal. During the match, in-game analyst Landon Donovan<\/b> said France had been \u201csluggish\u201d in the first half.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalas took it a step further in the postgame, calling France \u201carrogant.\u201d That brought a rebuttal from Ibrahimovi\u0107 that cut down Lalas and left Henry staring straight ahead, wide-eyed. (Would have loved to have heard his internal monologue at that moment.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not arrogance,\u2019\u2019 said Ibrahimovi\u0107. \u201cIt\u2019s confidence. Ignorant people will say it\u2019s arrogance. Intelligent people will say it\u2019s confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Back to you, Rebecca.<\/span><\/p>\n

Actually, perhaps that aforementioned reference to how Ibrahimovi\u0107 and Henry don\u2019t hide their disdain for Lalas should be amended to did not hide it<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Fox\u2019s \u201cWorld Cup Today\u201d studio show came on in advance of the United States men\u2019s national team\u2019s match Friday with Australia, Henry, Ibrahimovi\u0107, and Rebecca Lowe<\/b> were on set.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalas was not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Said Lowe, a truly superb host who has been adept at keeping a poker face even when Lalas launched into his peak condescension mode, \u201cChaps, Alexi left us,\u201d then added, \u201cAlexi will be back. Alexi will be back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYour plan worked,\u201d said Henry, smiling.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t you bring me into this,\u201d she said. \u201cNo chance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Then Ibrahimovi\u0107, whose own self-regard is so massive that it\u2019s amusing, got to the heart of the matter:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica,\u201d he said, \u201cyou\u2019re welcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalas still was part of the broadcast, just from a safe distance. He was on-site at the match in Seattle, along with fellow former Revolution star Clint Dempsey<\/b> and former US women\u2019s national team stalwart Carli Lloyd<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

No specifics were offered on if or when Lalas might return to the studio show. It\u2019s certainly not necessary. Henry is a genuinely outstanding analyst who chooses the candid truth over placating egos.<\/span><\/p>\n

That was best evidenced Wednesday when he was blunt in his annoyance with Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo\u2019s<\/b> decision to try to score a goal himself rather than make the obvious correct play during a 1-1 tie with Congo. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe team needs to score, not you need to score,\u201d Henry said.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Lowe at the helm, Henry providing astute analysis, and Ibrahimovi\u0107 there, whether he knows it or not, as cocky comic relief, Fox actually has an excellent studio program.<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not need Lalas. The players they have in the studio have far greater credentials and are better companions for viewers. But I imagine he will be back on set, though, perhaps even by the time you read this.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the World Cup in the United States, it\u2019s understandable why an American would be part of the lead studio team. I think it\u2019s fair to say Fox favors a certain type of American in that role. Lalas, who makes his political affiliations clear and probably owns an ugly red ballcap or two, fits the suit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Contrary to my feelings before and at the start of the World Cup, I won\u2019t mind if he comes back, presuming a return isn\u2019t accompanied by a management mandate for Henry and Ibrahimovi\u0107 to be nicer to him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lalas has dished it out for a long time. If he can\u2019t take it, well \u2026 what\u2019s the world we\u2019re looking for? Snowflake? Yes, I think that\u2019s it.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2024, Tyler Murray<\/b> was in his third season of calling Worcester Red Sox games while filling in occasionally on WEEI\u2019s Red Sox radio broadcasts. He beat out hundreds of candidates to become the Knicks\u2019 radio voice beginning in the 2024-25 season, and in his second season had the honor of calling the team\u2019s championship run, which culminated last Saturday with New York\u2019s clinching Game 5 victory. <\/span><\/p>\n

Numbers rate a closer look<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A note of context: Whenever you read an item about record television ratings for a sporting event \u2014 whether it\u2019s the World Cup, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup Final, or anything else drawing a huge audience \u2014 keep in mind that the methodology has changed in ways that are actually measuring more people, which leads to bigger viewership numbers. <\/span><\/p>\n

Just a hunch, but Nielsen Media\u2019s overdue decision in September 2020 to include out-of-home viewership in such places as bars probably has a decent effect on those numbers, you know? <\/span><\/p>\n
