{"id":3042,"date":"2026-06-18T21:05:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T21:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3042"},"modified":"2026-06-18T21:05:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T21:05:17","slug":"outdoor-drinking-zones-opening-in-boston-friday-during-world-cup-other-summer-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3042","title":{"rendered":"Outdoor drinking zones opening in Boston Friday during World Cup, other summer events"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<div>\n<p><span>Looks like Boston\u2019s shedding its famously puritanical image this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Friday, the city will open designated areas for outdoor alcohol and food consumption to accommodate a crush of visitors descending on the region for the World Cup and other summer festivities, officials said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3040\">R.I. governor signs three-year ban on charter schools into law<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPatrons will be able to consume alcoholic beverages outdoors within the Social District at Union and Marshall Streets \u2014 located in Downtown\u2019s Blackstone Block Historic District \u2014 and on Temple Place in Downtown Crossing,&#8221; Kelsey Bruun, a spokesperson for the city\u2019s Economic Opportunity &amp; Inclusion Cabinet, said in a statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>The zones will run through July 31. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>State lawmakers recently cleared the way for communities to allow public drinking and last calls as late as 3 a.m. through the end of July, should they choose. It\u2019s a big shift in a state that famously still doesn\u2019t allow happy hour drink specials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last week, Cambridge launched its own open container haven in compliance with the law. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now its neighbor across the Charles is getting into the game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Union-Marshall Street district will operate from 9 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. The Temple Place Social District will operate from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Temple Place will be closed to vehicular traffic on Friday as that zone opens up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There\u2019s a little red tape involved for businesses within the zones that wish to join the frothy fun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To participate, establishments \u201cmust file a one-day amendment application with the Boston Licensing Board,\u201d Bruun said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBusinesses may not begin serving or selling alcoholic beverages for public consumption within the designated district until they receive approval from the Licensing Board.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=3038\">A judge orders ICE to free a Wisconsin mosque leader, citing a \u2018substantial\u2019 free speech claim<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>There are also rules for bars and restaurants in the zones that get the green light. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBeverages for public consumption will be in clear plastic containers with a sticker or other label or inscription noting the establishment that sold the drink,\u201d Bruun said. \u201cParticipating establishments may not sell more than one 16 ounce alcoholic beverage for public consumption per customer per transaction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, soccer fans and other revelers thinking this is a BYOB affair had better think again. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPatrons may not bring outside alcohol \u2014 including alcohol purchased from another establishment \u2014 into a licensed premise,&#8221; Bruun said. \u201cParticipating establishments are responsible for educating patrons about the boundaries of the Social District.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>City officials reserve \u201cthe right to immediately modify or revoke a licensee\u2019s ability to participate for excessive noise, overserving patrons, underage alcohol consumption, and uncontrolled lines or loitering,\u201d Bruun said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Michael J. Nichols, president of the Downtown Boston Alliance, which worked with the city on planning for the Temple Place spot, praised the social districts. He said the Temple Place zone is home to 11 popular restaurants, 10 of which have alcohol licenses. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDowntown [Boston] is at its best when it is a destination,\u201d Nichols said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i>Niki Griswold of the Globe Staff contributed to this report.
