The six Democrats competing to replace US Representative Seth Moulton in the Sixth Congressional District faced off at a candidate forum Wednesday, offeringtakes on voters\u2019economic concerns, foreign affairs, healthcare, and climate policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 90-minute event was reminiscent of the Democratic presidential contest in 2020, when a bevy ofcandidates weresimilarly testingDemocratic messages to stand out as the party\u2019s best option to battle President Trump and his allies.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Wednesday\u2019s debate offered candidates an opportunity to try to break away from a crowded field ahead of the Sept. 1 primary.<\/span><\/p>\n

The candidates include Bethany Andres-Beck, a Middleton software engineer; John Beccia, a Lynnfield businessman; Jamie Belsito, the Topsfield town moderator; Dan Koh, a former White House official from Andover; Mariah Lancaster, a former federal worker of Salem; and state Representative Tram Nguyen of Andover.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to know from the rare one-on-one-on-one-on-one-on-one-on-one forum:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I agree\u2019 was the refrain of the night \u2014 especially on affordability<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Candidates offered similar, if not identical, messages indifferent fonts throughout the night, making it feel more like a collaborative policy discussion than a contentious debate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nowhere was that more prevalent than on issues around affordability, the cost of living, and the economy, phrases collectively mentioned more than 50 times.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn traveling across the 39 towns and cities, the No. 1 issue that we hear from folks is affordability,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cPeople are not going to worry about other things \u2014 they cannot worry about other things \u2014 if they cannot put food on the table.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Or as put by Beccia: \u201cAffordability is an issue, it is not just a slogan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Proposed solutions included strengthening worker protections (Nguyen), pushingmiddle-class tax relief (Beccia), reining in housing and child care costs (Koh), breaking up monopolies (Lancaster), reversing Trump\u2019s tariffs (Belsito), and changing federal policy to address education and energy prices (Andres-Beck).<\/span><\/p>\n

All of the candidates, separately, said they supported abolishing federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, implementing some form of universal health care, and regulating artificial intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, there were a few points of disagreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked whether they planned to support Senator Ed Markey or Moulton in the party\u2019s US Senate primary, four out of six named Markey. Koh, however, said he was \u201cone of the 50 percent undecided,\u201d and Beccia said he would \u201cabstain\u201d from answering.<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest point of contention? Cash.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The debate stayed civil \u2014 for the most part. That is, until a few candidates took swipes at their rivals\u2019 humongous cash hauls and insider connections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Koh has far out-raised the field, pulling in $3.5 million by the end of March.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beccia has put $2 million of his own money into his campaign, making him one of Massachusetts\u2019 biggest self-funders in recent years. He indirectly took aim at Koh\u2019s Washington experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re sending insiders to DC with people who just aren\u2019t focused on the right things,\u201d Beccia said. \u201cWe need to reform the system from top to bottom. Obviously, we\u2019ve got to take the money out of politics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Belsito then interjected:\u201cYou know the system\u2019s broken when you have $2 million of your own dollars to self-fund a campaign,\u201d drawing applause from the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beccia later said he\u2019s \u201cbeen very blessed\u201d and that he was \u201cbetting on myself\u201d but still supported system reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Belsito, who called the race an example of \u201cclass warfare,\u201d also referencedKoh\u2019s father, Howard Koh, who served as a public health official in the Obama administration, whilesaying her father, a floor layer, \u201ccan\u2019t call anybody to help me in Congress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRespectfully, I think we should leave parents out of this conversation,\u201d Koh responded.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have, and the majority on the stage do not have, access to the wealth that you do to be running for this race, and that is part of the problem of what this race has presented,\u201d Belsito said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates offered an array of anti-Trump messages<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

All six candidates invoked Trump\u2019s name dozens of times as they criticized his administration\u2019s tariffs and handling of global conflicts, among other things.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the group, in agreement that Democrats are \u201cangry\u201d and have an opportunity to \u201cdefine the future\u201d of their party, offered differing visions on the best resume to take on his administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those in the group with federal government experience \u2014 Koh, Belsito, and Lancaster \u2014 held up theirprior work in Washington as evidence that they understand how the federal system works. Nguyen leaned on her experience in state government. And Andres-Beck and Beccia emphasized that their experiences in science and business, respectively, would bring fresh, outside perspectives to Capitol Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n

They also disagreed on how much they would need to work across the aisle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow is not the time to play patty-cake with MAGA,\u201d said Koh, who pitchedperhaps the most direct anti-Trump platform of the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beccia, at another point, said it\u2019s important to \u201cfind common ground\u201d to \u201cget things done\u201d while discussing his business background \u2014 prompting a retort from Andres-Beck.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand how you can call for revolution on the one hand, and then say you expect bipartisan cooperation with people currently in power on the other,\u201d Andres-Beck said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The discussion was a nod to the deep anti-Trump sentiment in Massachusetts, a state that hasn\u2019t elected a Republican to the US House in the last three decades. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Micah Q. Jones, an Army veteran and the only Republican on the Sixth District ballot, in November.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need to accomplish will take Republican votes … especially in the Senate,\u201d Lancaster said. \u201cTo say that they won\u2019t, is ignorant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
