The HarperCollins imprint also put out \u201cHillbilly Elegy,\u201d the best-selling memoir from 2016 that helped make Vance a national figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vance has been working on and off on his new book since then, a tumultuous decade that included a Hollywood movie about his youth, a short stint as a U.S. senator from Ohio and now vice president to Donald Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>There\u2019s not a lot about Trump or other insider stories from Vance\u2019s political years, although he does express regret for criticizing the Democratic Party\u2019s \u201cchildless cat ladies,\u201d a comment that came back to haunt him while Trump\u2019s running mate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Get Starting Point<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><label>Enter Email<\/label><\/p>\n<div><button>Sign Up<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Instead, \u201cCommunion\u201d serves as a sort of manifesto for the role of religion in public life. Vance writes about transitioning from Protestant Christianity to atheism to Catholicism, and he credits his faith with giving him a sense of purpose he didn\u2019t get through his education at Yale University or working in the financial industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The book hits shelves less than five months before the midterm elections that will shape the final two years of Trump\u2019s second presidency. The midterms will also mark the unofficial start of the next presidential campaign, in which Vance is expected to be a contender.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>Vance recalled \u2018fusion\u2019 between religion and politics<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Vance wrote how he witnessed \u201cthe fusion between Republican politics and the Christianity of my youth.\u201d At that time, Vance wrote, \u201cI heard a fair amount about the evils of abortion and homosexuality,\u201d as well as then-President Bill Clinton\u2019s \u201crumored moral failings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Alongside these religious observations, Vance said he felt he was \u201cstarting to witness the beginning of a fissure in the Republican Party: between its business elites and its religious rank and file.\u201d That\u2019s something, Vance went on, that would \u201ceventually lead to my election as vice president.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vance\u2019s grandmother \u2014 his mamaw, as he calls her \u2014 was a central figure in his life, and her death led to an atrophying of his Christianity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWith her gone, no one really cared about my faith, and soon I stopped caring, too,\u201d he wrote. Christianity became \u201ccompletely irrelevant\u201d to him, including when he served in Iraq in the Marine Corps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the end of his service in 2006, Vance wrote that he \u201cwas no longer, in any real sense, a Christian.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>A near-death experience helped shape Vance\u2019s faith<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Returning to his military base after his grandmother\u2019s funeral, Vance wrote that he lost control of his car on a rain-slicked road, but inexplicably stopped before hurtling into a guardrail and potentially over the side of a mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He said it was \u201cthe closest I\u2019ve ever come to a supernatural experience,\u201d and the feeling remained \u201ceven during my later years as a strident atheist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As his military service wrapped up, a colleague introduced Vance to the work of author Ayn Rand, whose notion of the virtuousness of selfishness stood \u201cin as stark opposition to Christian morality as anything I\u2019d ever read.\u201d This notion appealed to Vance, he wrote, noting that Rand\u2019s philosophy \u201cfilled a void left by the faith I\u2019d discarded\u201d and that he became a \u201cself-professed atheist and meritocrat.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI didn\u2019t care about God\u2019s will,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI cared about my own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>\u2018I will marry this girl\u2019<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Immediately struck by his now-wife Usha Vance, the vice president wrote that he told a friend he thought he was \u201cobsessed\u201d with her while they were in law school together. He praised her intensity, intelligence and curiosity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI will marry this girl,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOr I will be a lifelong bachelor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He also wrote how their discussion about death, sparked by Joan Didion\u2019s \u201cThe Year of Magical Thinking,\u201d highlighted their different views on the afterlife \u2014 she was worried by it and he wasn\u2019t, even in his atheist years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUsha, like Didion, dreaded neither the \u2018loss of heaven\u2019 nor \u2018the pains of hell\u2019 for the most logical of reasons: She simply didn\u2019t think they exist. I came to believe in both, but I still didn\u2019t find either particularly motivating,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>Peter Thiel was a turning point<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>In the midst of this, Vance wrote that he attended a talk by Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley investor who would become one of Vance\u2019s early political backers. He was impressed by Thiel\u2019s discussion of hypercompetition among professionals, accompanied by \u201ctechnological stagnation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPossibly the smartest person I\u2019d ever met, he identified very openly as a Christian,\u201d Vance wrote, adding that Thiel \u201cdefied the simple social template I had constructed \u2014 that dumb people were religious and smart people were atheists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=2788\">Don\u2019t expect a repeat. UFC CEO Dana White says \u2018never again\u2019 to another White House fight night.<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>\u2018Hillbilly Elegy,\u2019 Trump and fame<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Initially skeptical his first book would be successful, Vance described how an interview he gave in the summer of 2016 about \u201cthe sense that the hillbillies had been left behind by the leaders of a country\u201d caught fire, dovetailing with Trump\u2019s campaign that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI became a controversial figure in my own right, and I tasted my first bit of heated public criticism,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vance said he was \u201ctempted by the flexibility\u201d of \u201cbeing a public intellectual,\u201d although he would choose a different path.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>Vance converted to Catholicism<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The future vice president recalled visiting a French cathedral in 2018 with his wife, Usha, and young son, Ewan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Reflecting on how the Catholic Church had endured over the years, his ambivalence about religion began to fade. He writes that he felt \u201ca distinct sense of belonging and presence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He was baptized a year later, writing that he enjoyed the \u201cwork\u201d required to become Catholic \u2014 readings and discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>The vetting process for vice president was intense<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Vance wrote that he figured it was a \u201clong shot\u201d for Trump to choose him as vice president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen his staff told me I was on the short list, I almost thought it was a prank call,\u201d Vance wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He recalled the in-person interview the most fascinating part of the vetting process, which included being asked if he had ever cheated on his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI haven\u2019t, but I assume people who have don\u2019t just admit it to a stranger?\u201d he responded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The transition to the ticket was difficult for his family, he wrote, particularly his eldest child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He told Charlie Kirk, the young conservative activist who founded Turning Point USA and was assassinated last year, about the struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDon\u2019t try to convince your son it\u2019s not a sacrifice,\u201d Kirk said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>Regretting the \u2018cat ladies\u2019 comment<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Vance\u2019s penchant for stirring controversy came up again during the campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Critics resurfaced his 2021 remarks that the Democratic Party was run by \u201cchildless cat ladies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vance now concedes that his comment was \u201cboneheaded\u201d and \u201cone of the dumbest things I ever said.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAside from enraging a great number of people,\u201d Vance added, \u201cit had the added benefit of distracting from the actual point I wanted to make, which was that our society is becoming pathologically hostile to having kids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>Is this Vance\u2019s pre-2028 presidential campaign memoir?<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The book\u2019s release likely serves to ramp up speculation that Vance will seek the presidency in 2028. That\u2019s a possibility the Republican vice president has said he\u2019s not focused on right now, indicating he\u2019d wait until after the 2026 midterm elections to decide on a campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Presidential hopefuls often release books before launching a campaign, giving them a moment in the spotlight before new audiences and a chance to crystallize their message before embarking on a campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Already, potential 2028 candidates on the Democratic side have recently published books or will do so soon, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, California Gov.
