Rhode Island is staring at the prospect of sweeping change across all three branches of government.<\/span><\/p>\n

The transition is already underway in the legislature, where Val Lawson became Senate president last year and Chris Blazejewski was elected House speaker last month. Voters will elect a new attorney general in 2026, and neither the governor nor lieutenant governor appears assured of another term. Meanwhile, the judiciary is preparing for what could be a generational turnover of its own.<\/span><\/p>\n

By the end of next year, every branch of state government could look markedly different than it does today.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Yet the partisan balance is unlikely to change much. Rhode Islanders may be witnessing the end of one era of Democratic leadership and the beginning of another.<\/span><\/p>\n

Governor<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Incumbent Dan McKee is trailing Helena Foulkes in the polls, and Polymarket now gives Foulkes an 86 percent chance to win the Democratic primary (that\u2019s similar to the odds Spain has of beating Cape Verde in the World Cup today). Independent Ken Block and Republican frontrunner Aaron Guckian both hope to have a say in the general election, but they know a Foulkes primary victory would make their odds much longer. <\/span><\/p>\n
