LONG POND, Pa. \u2014 Christopher Bell will race at Pocono, and possibly the next month or so, with a cast on his left wrist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bell sustained \u201ca normal broken bone\u201d that didn\u2019t require surgery during a hit at Michigan International Speedway last week. Bell kept both hands on the wheel during the crash with Chase Elliott and \u201cslightly smashed\u201d his left hand during an impact that registered 69 Gs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRight now, I\u2019m pretty much driving the car one-handed,\u201d Bell said Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Doctors expect Bell to fully recover in six weeks. He has enough mobility in the cast to maneuver Pocono, nicknamed the \u201cTricky Triangle,\u201d but could face tougher tests over the next two weekends with consecutive road-course races in San Diego and Sonoma, California.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope for more healing before we get to those tracks for sure,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for Pocono, Bell plans to be behind the wheel for all 400 miles Sunday. Nonetheless, Brandon Jones will be on standby if Bell has problems. Jones sat through simulator sessions earlier this week to get up to speed in the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s either going to be I\u2019m going to commit to the race and I\u2019m going to do it, or I\u2019m going to just start and ride around until the first yellow,\u201d said Bell, who hadn\u2019t gotten behind the wheel until practice Saturday. \u201cBut, as of right now, I\u2019m full commit planning on running 400 miles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bell\u2019s cast was molded to better fit around the steering wheel, and his team \u201ctook a lot of material off of the left side of the wheel just to make it skinnier,\u201d Bell said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we\u2019re as ready as we can get and see what happens,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bell remembers every detail of the accident despite a jarring hit that dislodged a SAFER barrier and caused a 20-minute red flag for repairs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I hit the wall, my earpiece popped out, so I scared the crap out of my wife and probably everyone else listening because I didn\u2019t respond to (my spotter) whenever he was checking on me,\u201d Bell said. \u201cBut my ear deal popped out, so I didn\u2019t have any communication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Also concerning: His car was on fire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to get out as quick as I could,\u201d he said. \u201cI knew my wrist was broke right away because I couldn\u2019t disconnect my shirt. I reached down, tried to disconnect my shirt and I couldn\u2019t squeeze the button, so I had to use my right hand to do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also injured a foot, but X-rays were negative. His foot ended up just being badly bruised.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI knew right away that my head was OK because I didn\u2019t have any sort of headache, didn\u2019t black out,\u201d Bell said. \u201cI remembered everything. \u2026 Just super, super blessed that I didn\u2019t hit my noggin and glad I can continue on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Three-peat on the line for Hamlin<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Denny Hamlin will try to deliver the second three-peat of the NASCAR season \u2014 and at the track where he\u2019s enjoyed his most success.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamlin won the last two races, at Michigan and Nashville, and three of the last four. No one would be surprised to see him make it three in a row and four of five at Pocono, where he has seven career Cup Series victories and a staggering 24 top-10 finishes in 36 starts.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said Saturday that his confidence is at an all-time high.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel very confident in the way that I\u2019m approaching each racetrack, the way that I need to get speed out of the cars, what I need out of them in traffic, all those things,\u201d he said. \u201dI feel pretty dialed in with that right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And he said that before Hamlin won his third consecutive pole position Saturday, with a lap of 51.948 seconds during qualifying when he averaged 173.250 m.p.h. around the 2\u00bd-mile track. He barely beat out Kyle Larson, by just 0.057 seconds, for pole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting behind Hamlin and Larson are Daniel Su\u00e1rez in the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, and Hamlin\u2019s JGR teammates Ty Gibbs (No. 54 Toyota) and defending race winner Chase Briscoe (No. 19 Toyota).<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s Hamlin\u2019s third pole of the season and the sixth of his career at Pocono. Hamlin is trying to become the 31st driver to win three races in a row during NASCAR\u2019s modern era (1972-present).<\/span><\/p>\n

In that era, there have been 30 instances of a driver winning at least three races in a row. Of those, the driver who accomplished the streak has won the series championship 12 times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hamlin has 63 career Cup wins and 51 career Cup poles, and he quipped that he\u2019s now targeting the 60-60 club.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fellow 23XI driver Tyler Reddick won the first three races of the season. If Hamlin wins Sunday, the series would have two three-peat winners in the same season for the first time since 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

The start time for Sunday\u2019s race was moved up two hours because of inclement weather in the forecast. Instead of a 3 p.m. start, the green flag will drop shortly after 1 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n
