Brown work to establish chemistry at Patriots minicamp<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>None of them, however, had scored. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Instead, the boys \u2014 whose own season ended abruptly this week after their team forfeited a state semifinal game amid a dispute over graduation cigars \u2014 packed the stands at Babson College to support the Ipswich girls lacrosse team during its state championship    match with Sandwich Thursday afternoon. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cWe can forget about what happened,\u201d said Kirby Domingo, a junior on the boys team. \u201cObviously it\u2019s a big deal, but we\u2019re not going to make it about ourselves. It\u2019s all about the girls today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sandwich, however, defeated Ipswich 9-6. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The show of support came a couple of days after the fourth-seeded boys team forfeited its Division 4 state semifinal game against Cohasset after several players were ruled ineligible under the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association\u2019s chemical health policy, which prohibits student-athletes from using tobacco during their season. <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Get Starting Point<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><label>Enter Email<\/label><\/p>\n<div><button>Sign Up<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Players and parents have challenged the decision, arguing the cigars at the center of the controversy were homemade and filled with tea leaves rather than tobacco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe boys are all here to support the girls,\u201d said Corie Clark, whose daughter plays on the girls team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Clark said what should have been a celebratory week for the town\u2019s lacrosse programs instead became overshadowed by controversy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI know a lot of the boys in that program, and they have lived for this,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019ve been doing it since they were 6 years old. It\u2019s just sad.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Others in the town\u2019s lacrosse community expressed frustration that the season ended despite parents\u2019 efforts to show the cigars contained no tobacco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nathan Wright, a coach in the town\u2019s youth lacrosse program, said he has known many of the players for years and struggled to understand why school officials rejected the explanations provided by parents. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere are levels of nuance to discipline, especially with high school kids,\u201d Wright said. \u201cI really feel like they just came down unnecessarily hard.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Questions about how the eligibility decision was reached continued to swirl Thursday. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Police body camera footage shows a tense meeting Tuesday morning between principal Jonathan Mitchell and the fathers of two lacrosse players hours before the team ultimately forfeited its game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During the exchange, Mitchell said the decision was not his alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a huge decision, I\u2019m not going to make it solo,\u201d Mitchell says. \u201cSo I bring in the superintendent because I trust his wisdom. I bring in the athletic director because he\u2019s always been by my side. And we talked about it for the last two days.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mitchell said he, Superintendent Brian Blake, and athletic director Tom Gallagher reviewed available evidence before concluding the players were ineligible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m very disappointed to have to do this, but I\u2019m doing my job,\u201d Mitchell tells the parents in the video. \u201cHow do we enforce the rules? I can\u2019t just look the other way. We\u2019ve got more evidence that says they did it than not.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mitchell\u2019s comments in the video appear to be the first public description from a school official about how the determination was made. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A police report related to the meeting says Mitchell called police shortly after 10 a.m. and requested an officer respond to the school \u201cASAP.\u201d The responding officer wrote that John Gianakakis and Drew Wile were \u201cnoticeably upset by the ruling and wanted to vent and be heard by Mitchell.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=2511\">Trump nominates US Attorney Jay Clayton to be director of national intelligence<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>During the meeting, both parents challenged the district\u2019s conclusion and argued administrators failed to consider evidence they provided that the cigars contained tea leaves rather than tobacco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s a fake cigar, it\u2019s been proven,\u201d Gianakakis says during the exchange. \u201cNow you\u2019re telling all us parents, all us adults &#8230; that we\u2019re liars.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wile accused Mitchell of initially indicating the players would be allowed to play before reversing course after Blake became involved. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mitchell rejected that characterization and defended the school district\u2019s process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEverybody had their due process,\u201d Mitchell says. \u201cWe looked at the evidence. We made a final determination. That\u2019s the end of the story.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With Ipswich forfeiting the semifinal, Cohasset is scheduled to face Nantucket in the Division 4 boys championship game Saturday at Worcester State University. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The controversy stems from a post-graduation gathering at Pavilion Beach on Sunday where several members of the boys lacrosse team posed for photographs with cigars, images that later circulated on social media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Christian Gianakakis, a senior on the team, said the cigars were prepared by his father so students could participate in what he described as a graduation tradition without smoking tobacco. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>John Gianakakis said he made the cigars using chamomile tea leaves and other non-tobacco materials packed in empty cigar wrappers. He said he later recovered some of the cigars from the beach and provided them to school officials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The MIAA said the eligibility decision was made by local administrators. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>As of Thursday afternoon, district officials had not publicly explained whether administrators concluded the cigars contained tobacco. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>The forfeit ended a season in which fourth-seeded Ipswich advanced to the Division 4 Final Four with tournament victories over Tyngsborough, Lunenburg, and Winthrop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While many Ipswich players declined to discuss the cigar issue on Thursday, other students were more willing to share their frustration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI think it\u2019s soft,\u201d said Ben DeFrank, a member of the varsity basketball team. \u201cThey didn\u2019t let them play, even though all the cigars were fake. Everyone knows that. I think it\u2019s horrible.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAll the seniors worked so hard for it, to not even play the outcome,\u201d said Cullen Courville, a junior on the football team. \u201cI just think the whole situation is just so bad.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Others said they were encouraged to see the boys cheering on the girls.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey could have just stayed down low, feeling bad for themselves, but they\u2019re here supporting the girls\u2019 team,\u201d said Julie Tivan, whose daughter coaches the Ipswich girls team. \u201cI think that\u2019s awesome.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As the clock counted down, the boys in the cheering  section turned stony faced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The girls team, losing 9-6, was mounting a late push toward the opposing goal.
