That secured an 8-7 triumph in a Division 2 semifinal Monday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cGreat players come up with great plays when we need them,\u201d said Reading coach Rachel Monroe. \u201cThey showed they could be that tonight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span>Wofford-bound Lily Rodgers led the way with five goals for the unblemished No. 2 Rockets (22-0). Reading led through three, 8-5, before Hingham\u2019s Vivien Nicholas (3 goals) sliced the deficit to two and Kylie McAloon trimmed it to one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The No. 3 Harborwomen (20-3) nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback, but Reading provided the finishing touches to earn a rematch with top-seed, defending champion Walpole on Wednesday (6:45 p.m.) at Babson College.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Get Starting Point<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><label>Enter Email<\/label><\/p>\n<div><button>Sign Up<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Lily Rodgers gave the Rockets a 2-1 edge through one quarter, then Mia Milligan, Maeve Maroney, and their Hingham teammates answered to tie it at 5 at halftime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Liza O\u2019Brien, Shea Cullen, and goalie Addy Mathews fueled a pivotal third quarter for Reading, then the Rockets played keepaway to keep dancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019ve been in these positions before, where we\u2019ve had to hold the lead,\u201d Lily Rodgers said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely something we prepare for, and we realize we have to trust each other, give the ball to each other, and wear down the other team.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sometimes, running out the clock is simply a formality; in this case, it was a war of attrition that came down to the very end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hingham coach Carla Farkes highlighted the hustle of Aria Giardino and the heart of her entire team. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of these kids that are really resilient and never give up,\u201d Farkes said. \u201cI\u2019m really proud of that. Kids found ways to make plays.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For Lily Rodgers, it was \u201cliterally a dream\u201d to see her sister secure the winning draw. After countless battles in the backyard, they\u2019re bringing their firepower to a grand stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Afterward, as the Rockets soaked in the moment, Monroe reminded them that the biggest celebration was yet to come. But there\u2019s one ingredient Tosone knows can\u2019t be taught.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWalpole girls are tough as bleep,\u201d Tosone said. \u201cThey really are. There\u2019s something in the water. Female athletes in Walpole, they\u2019re talented and they\u2019re tough. I\u2019m the beneficiary of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The top-seeded Timberwolves (20-2) trailed, 7-6, late in the third quarter before rattling off five straight goals to seize command and dispatch the No. 4 Dragons (16-6). New Hampshire-bound senior Ava MacLean poured in six, including two in the fourth quarter, and Emily Dunn and Emily Hagan added two apiece.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cWe said that if we play our game and we play at our pace, we don\u2019t think anybody can keep up with us,\u201d MacLean said. \u201cThat was the message going into the fourth. We absolutely dominated the fourth quarter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Gabby Fisher and Anna Fletcher paced Duxbury with two goals each, and freshman goalie Sami Collentro kept the Dragons afloat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Timberwolves led at halftime, 5-4, and tied it at 7 on a Grace Hagan delivery with 15 seconds left in the third. MacLean then gave Walpole the lead for good early in the fourth, and the Timberwolves ran out the clock from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After a one-goal win over Duxbury in the regular season, the Timberwolves understood it would be far from a breeze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe knew, for sure, that we were going to have to dig deep,\u201d Tosone said. \u201cThere was no doubt about it. We were prepared for a struggle, and it was a struggle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>How does this run to the title game compare to last year\u2019s championship run? Tosone replied: \u201cYou can\u2019t compare your children.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>MacLean said this journey is special because there were doubters after the Timberwolves graduated firepower from a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis year, it\u2019s all about proving people wrong,\u201d MacLean said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For Duxbury, which broke through for its first semifinal berth since 2023, it was an agonizing end to a memorable spring.
