NEW YORK \u2014 Of all the work that awaits Brayan Bello<\/b> in his new assignment in the minor leagues, at least some is intangible.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Red Sox want him to be happy again.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first got here, he was a guy that had this big personality, always had a smile on his face, interacting with teammates, and you could tell just loved to compete and loved to pitch,\u201d chief baseball officer Craig Breslow<\/b> said Friday afternoon. \u201cWe lost that a little bit, where he was putting a ton of pressure on himself to go out and perform.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOne of the things that we asked him to do was to fall in love with baseball all over again. To go down, to compete \u2014 he\u2019s going to work hard, we know that \u2014 but to kind of remember why he loved playing this game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sox demoted Bello to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday after his latest mess, a six-run, 40-pitch first inning against the Orioles (in what became a five-inning, eight-run start overall). His ERA rose to 6.34, 10.35 as a starter (vs. 0.71 when appearing behind an opener).<\/span><\/p>\n

Those struggles grew so extreme, Breslow said, that the Red Sox decided \u201cthis was no longer the best place for him to reset and work through this process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Bello, 27, is in the third year of a heavily backloaded six-year, $55 million contract. He had been the Sox\u2019 longest-tenured starter, a member of the rotation since late 2022. The organization still has \u201ca lot of belief in Brayan as a major league starter,\u201d Breslow said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just not right now, not while they are trying to turn the season around.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMade that decision with the best interest of Brayan in mind, with the best interest of the Red Sox,\u201d Breslow said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bello handled it \u201cvery professionally, very respectfully,\u201d according to Breslow. He said Bello\u2019s attitude after the game Thursday \u2014 when he told reporters to \u201cjust stop that talk\u201d about whether he should be in the rotation or bullpen or majors or minors \u2014 didn\u2019t factor into the Sox\u2019 call.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bello\u2019s body language has indicated frustration, including when he tried to wave off catcher Carlos Narv\u00e1ez during a mound visit Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe just need to go down there and let him have some success and kind of build some insulation,\u201d Breslow said. \u201cAt some point somebody is going to hit a ball that gets through a hole somewhere, and [Bello needs to] go right back to attacking strikes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no secret that once things started to go in the wrong direction, they unraveled a little bit, and part of what this reset will do is give him a chance to work through that. And he\u2019ll kind of remember and he\u2019ll figure out again that his game is built on managing contact, so some balls are going to find holes, and let\u2019s get a double play with the next groundball.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Red Sox plan to call up a starter to replace Bello, whose turn comes around Tuesday. Interim manager Chad Tracy<\/b> mentioned one candidate: lefthander Jake Bennett<\/b>, who owns 1.60 ERA with Worcester.<\/span><\/p>\n

The newest new guy<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Joe La Sorsa<\/b>, a lefthanded reliever, joined the Red Sox for their series opener against the Yankees on Friday, a day after they acquired him from the Pirates.<\/span><\/p>\n

La Sorsa, 28, got a kick out of the timing: He is from nearby Katonah and played at St. John\u2019s University in Queens. Since he grew up a Mets fan, yes, he would quite enjoy pitching at Yankee Stadium, especially as a visitor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the biggest rivalry in all of sports,\u201d he said. \u201cVery happy to be part of the Red Sox and do whatever I can to beat them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Sox moved Garrett Crochet<\/b> to the 60-day IL. It doesn\u2019t change his timeline to return.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Whitlock locked in<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Garrett Whitlock<\/b> (left knee inflammation) will make a rehab appearance with Worcester on Saturday, Tracy said. The Sox haven\u2019t decided if it will be his only one. He is eligible to return from the IL on Tuesday \u2026 Lefthander Patrick Sandoval<\/b> (biceps, elbow) tossed 1\u2153 scoreless innings for Worcester on Friday, his first appearance in a new rehab assignment. He retired four of five batters and walked the other. Breslow said there are \u201ca few different paths that are available to us\u201d regarding when the Red Sox bring Sandoval back and in what role \u2026 Tracy on the Yankees\u2019 Aaron Judge<\/b> (stress fracture in rib): \u201cI\u2019ll say the same thing I said about [Tarik<\/b>] Skubal<\/b>: Obviously, for us, not having to deal with him is good; not great for baseball.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
