The upsets<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>After the brackets started to break a bit Monday, they went back to chalk Tuesday, but Wednesday brought plenty of exciting upsets, with nine top-eight ranked squads getting bounced by a lower seed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It starts in Division 2 baseball, where No. 2 North Reading became the highest seed to falter in any sport this spring. The defending D2 champs fell, 14-4, to No. 15 Weston, which got a home run and five RBIs from <b>Ryan Hinckley<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Also in D2, No. 28 Billerica shocked No. 12 North Attleborough, 10-7, in the second round as <b>John Taft<\/b> and <b>Cam Amenkowicz<\/b> each logged three hits. The Division 3 baseball bracket saw its biggest upset yet, as No. 13 Dracut took care of No. 4 Falmouth, 3-1, with <b>Colby Pratt\u2019s<\/b> four-hitter. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>Cambridge emerges from intense back-and-forth battle with Natick in Division 1 baseball tourney<\/div>\n<p><span>Three top-eight softball teams were sent packing, leading with Division 4\u2019s fourth-seeded Frontier, a 6-4 second-round victim of a young West Bridgewater team that got a homer from freshman <b>Alanna Fidalgo<\/b> and nine strikeouts from eighth-grader <b>Regan Bryant<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In D1, No. 10 Malden Catholic took advantage of <b>Chloe O\u2019Neill\u2019s<\/b> two-run sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to nip No. 7 Hopkinton, 12-11, in the second round, while back in D4 No. 9 Lunenburg snuck past No. 8 Manchester Essex, 10-7. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No. 6 Newburyport become the highest-seeded team to bow out of the boys\u2019 lacrosse tournament following a 15-12 loss to Shawsheen, the second year in a row the Rams eliminated the Clippers in the second round. Division 1 (No. 9 Xaverian 12, No. 8 Newton North 10) and Division 2 (No. 9 Walpole 11, No. 8 King Philip 9) both saw minor upsets in their 8-9 matchups. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>Wednesday\u2019s boys\u2019 lacrosse roundup: Unbeaten Shawsheen sticks with it, surges past Newburyport<\/div>\n<p><span>In the girls\u2019 lacrosse semifinals, No. 6 Manchester Essex became the only team seeded outside the top four to reach the semifinals thus far with an 11-8 upset of No. 3 Hamilton-Wenham. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No. 5 Medfield became the first top-eight seed to be eliminated from the Division 2 boys\u2019 volleyball tournament, a 3-2 victim of No. 21 Norton, which got 27 kills from <b>Andrew Strojny<\/b>, 29 digs from <b>Alex George<\/b>, and 42 assists from <b>Jordan Moore<\/b>. Medfield had swept Norton twice during the regular season. <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>3. Best finishes<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa Fourth-seeded Shepherd Hill stayed alive in the Division 2 softball bracket, 5-4 over No. 13 Middleborough, thanks to <b>Cadence Duval\u2019s<\/b> walkoff RBI single, which followed<b> Erin Gormley\u2019s<\/b> tying two-run homer in the seventh. <\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>Wednesday\u2019s tournament roundup: Hingham girls\u2019 lacrosse proves too much for Bedford<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa Rockland\u2019s <b>Tighe Porter<\/b> tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an inside-the-park home run, and an inning later <b>Dustin Ayer<\/b> ended it with an RBI single to produce a 4-3 Division 4 second-round win for the sixth-seeded Bulldogs over No. 22 Old Colony. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u25aa No. 9 Lunenburg managed its 10-7 Division 4 second-round victory over No. 8 Manchester Essex thanks to a four-run ninth inning and 13 strikeouts from <b>Aria McCarthy<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>4. Going, going, gone<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Cambridge\u2019s <b>Oliver Henke<\/b> homered twice, Bellingham\u2019s <b>Megan Skarin<\/b> and Rockland\u2019s <b>Tighe Porter<\/b> produced inside-the-park round-trippers, and <b>Erin Gormley<\/b> crushed a tying two-run homer in the seventh for Shepherd Hill. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The rest of the day\u2019s blasts belonged to Middleborough\u2019s <b>Grace Lynch<\/b>, Weston\u2019s Hinckley, Tyngsborough\u2019s <b>Kiley Hogan<\/b>, Dighton-Rehoboth\u2019s <b>Kylie Smith<\/b>, Reading\u2019s <b>Claire Puglielli<\/b>, Hoosac Valley\u2019s <b>Genevieve Lagess<\/b>, West Bridgewater\u2019s Fidalgo, Natick\u2019s <b>Henry Kinchla<\/b>, Shawsheen\u2019s <b>Dyllon Pratt<\/b>, Stoughton\u2019s <b>Kelsey Whitman<\/b>, Natick\u2019s <b>Alex Jacques<\/b>, and Newton North\u2019s <b>Olivia Allen<\/b> and <b>Lyla Berton<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>5. Gatorade tabs Bumila<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Bishop Feehan ace <b>Brody Bumila<\/b> has been selected as the 2026 Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The 6-foot-9-inch, 255-pound senior lefthander, who pitches in the high 90s and can reach 101, finished the regular season with a 4-0 record, 0.60 ERA, and 85 strikeouts in 35 innings, averaging 2.4 per inning. He also hit .361 with 3 homers, 15 RBIs, and 13 runs scored. He led the Shamrocks to a 14-6 record and the No. 2 seed in the Division 1 tournament. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFacing Bumila was pretty cool,\u201d said Wellesley coach <b>Ted Novio<\/b>. \u201cBesides the velocity, he\u2019s a very focused athlete who handles the electric atmosphere that follows him extremely well.
